For some reason, my imac isn't connecting well with the router. It works once in a while, but I usually get an exclamation on the wifi icon. My other devices connects to the router fine so there's something wrong going on with the imac. It didn't have any problems connecting to the wifi at other places.
Can I buy an external wifi device that connects via usb to the imac that would fix the problem?

I've already tried trouble shooting with networks in system preferences.

"Can I buy an external wifi device that connects via usb to the imac that would fix the problem?"
yes, or just have the "geniuses" install another wifi card
- Something external may be better, taking the imac to the apple store won't be funpinkfloyd

- Doesn't support Yosemite, nevermindpinkfloyd

Maybe something here will help?
- Had wifi problems before upgradingpinkfloyd
- just trying to help before you go for an external, some of the tips there are regardless of OSmonospaced

- how old is your iMac? is it up to date with all OS updates?
- how old is your router? is it a G router? You might need to upgrade to N
- how far are you from your wifi router? The above might help or move closer.
- have you deleted the network preferences?
- go into keychain and delete your wifi password and profiles you see there, re-set up.
- do you have other items that are wireless interfering? Microwave, phone etc?
- Also reboot your cable modem or other internet connection doohickey.CyBrainX

Imac is 2011
Didn't have any wifi issues where I lived before.
Already tried deleting keychain password, wifi, wifi network and readding them.
Had the issue before Yosemite.

When I first moved in, I typed in the password wrong where I did an uppercase instead of a lowercase. Could that be the problem?

- I redid the password, but still probs. Maybe the router is now blocking me.pinkfloyd
- Wifi does work once in a while though.pinkfloyd

I was having similar issues -- mine was more the network would drop out intermittently. essentially, you want to delete the current wifi service and create a new one.
in Network Preferences, first select the WiFi service from the list, click the cog at the bottom and "make network inactive" then "apply"
Then delete that WiFi service from the list by selecting it then clicking the minus (-) button, and hit "apply". now reboot.
Back to same Network Preferences, click the plus (+) button and create a NEW wifi service through the interface drop-down (name it Wifi2 or something a bit different from last time. you'll then need to sign on to your network again.
this worked for me.
- < this is not the same as "forgetting" a wifi network.Gnash

Thanks, but i've tried that already. Did my roommate intentionaly give me the wrong letter casing on the password?
- if the case is wrong it won't connect at all - it's not the same password. it shouldn't matter that you tried an incorrect password.Gnash
- if you think it's password related try this:

How old is your router?
If the router is still available i.e. Amazon...buy a the same model, try it and if it works...package your old broken router and send it back for a refund.

Still haven't answered if you have a old router. probably the issue. N spectrum is wider, therefore larger range.
