According to the movie Interstellar...124 yrs.
Give or take a century o two, or was it millennia?

There are multiple phases a domain goes through after it expires.
40 days grace period + 30 days redemption period + 5 days pending deletion
A total of 75 days after the expiration it will be available to buy again.

You can use one of those sites like Pool.com or SnapNames.com to grab the domain before it gets released to the public. This worked for me on a domain, but you have to pay extra.

Get it backordered with the current registrar, or the drop-catching service they are working on. Who's the registrar?
- benfal990
the registrar is:
GMO INTERNET, INC. DBA ONAMAE.COM
- I've no idea who they are, would use both godaddy and namejet backorders myself.raf
