How do you create this sort of pattern. Not just the basic grid, but when the grid is distorted and spreads. I'm looking to apply this sort of grid into different shapes and patterns and it seems there is a better way to do it than to just draw out every line. Any ideas?

lay out the grid in Illustrator, distort/warp, render to pixels

start with a standard grid and work via pinch / warp / moving shit around?
or start with a nonstandard grid and just draw it out. connecting dots among angles etc.

I don't know why that seemed way to simple. I'll give it a go. Thanks

I wouldn't use the warp / pinch / any filters... you'll distort the dots and the lines will have arcs (the lines should remain straight)...
... do it by hand... shouldn't take you more than an hour or two to work out

3d modelled?

Ironically I spent today making test rigs for an animated version of this in 3D space for a video project. It is possible with an Atom Array or MoGraph Cloner set on a triangulated mesh in Cinema 4D and I'm sure other 3D apps have some workflow that would do similar too. Bonus: you can animate it too!
