Do any of you (or know anyone) who Air BnB's a room in their own apartment?
I'd love to find out more about the experience...
Thanks

Yeah, I have friends who do it regularly, and a good friend of mine is one of AirBNB's photographers who goes around shooting the apartments.

I have a friend who rented out her extra bedroom on airbnb in Brooklyn and was able to make it one of her primary income sources... she made so many contacts from airbnb that now she only rents to previous guests or their referrals.

and of course, what AirBnB thread would be complete without...

You can make 2x the amount you would rent the room to a roommate for.
- Oh man way more than thatmonospaced
- You might not rent everyday and NYC is expensive.omahadesigns

So should I rent a 4 bedroom in prime NYC, and airbnb the other rooms?
- Kind of weird to run your own hostel.omahadesigns
- My best friend in London does it. Well, he owns a 3 bedroom apartment and AirBnB's, and makes 3 times as much as he did renting.orrinward2

In my building, anyone caught renting via AirBnB will be kicked out or forced to sell your unit.
- Is that legal?omahadesigns
- yes since subletting is a breach of the lease agreementmonospaced

Wasn't there some legal issues with airbnb specifically in NYC? There's also issues with squatters, and having a bunch of strangers in your apt who can make your life hell.

Yeah its illegal to rent out the whole place for less than 30 days.

The neighbor next door rents her place out sometimes.
It's actually rather annoying because there's new people in there all the time. I'm positive the landlord has no idea.
The problem is the fact that most people who've stayed don't respect the people who actually live here. They've been loud, hanging out in the hallway late at night and go on the roof. This isn't a dorm, it's an apartment building with families and people working.
If you own a space, I guess it's okay to do what you want (rent), but again, this is just a rental building.

As long as you're there while they're renting, it becomes a lot easier to get away with, as opposed to using the entire unit as income.
- Yeah, this chic is never there. We think her boyfriend broke up with her so she's trying to keep apt via ABB income.antimotion

In 2002, I had a 3 bedroom and I rented out 2 rooms and the living room, while I stayed in the medium sized room. Charged everyone more, and practically lived for free for about a year.
- But you had no living room? Lousy life.omahadesigns
- No need, my gf went to my room and we fucked.pinkfloyd
