I've a couple of times pretended my laser machine is more powerful than it is so that I can get jobs I want.
Then sworn at myself as I'm working at 4am to meet the deadline, because it takes n times as long to cut as it should.

Once took on an animation project without animation experience. Learned a lot about the craft, and myself, during the process. Surprisingly great results.

I once shot a documentary without having any film experience besides watching the. (Did do photography)
Learned a hella lot. Hated my decision at times.
But in the end it was all ok...

handlettering. ended up doing everything in illustrator and then used a projector... had to trace and fill everything over night to meet a deadline. turned out great and client was happy, but...
also once took a project that would have needed 3D (illustrating technical concepts / industrial machines). did this one in illustrator too with it’s shitty native »3D« filter and a lot of guessing... turned out, well, close enough...

i kind of had it in reverse.. i was offered a job on a project based on what my boss thought i could figure out on the run.. like, you know, learning to code ..
leap of faith on his part i guess, had massive dread fear for the first 2 months.. in the end, worked on a different part of the project without coding.. like seriously, who needs cold fusion coders anyway..
- there was a small bit of faking it on my part, but i remember being pretty upfront in the interview about what i could doautoflavour
- and coding definitely wasnt part of it..autoflavour

interviewed for a in-house job right out of school that required 50% web & 50% print. Knew nothing about the web, lied my ass off. Spent the next year self learning html/CSS... ultimately learned that I hate coding. Became an Art Director instead.

I once told a client I was a graphic designer just to get the job.

Just today I told a client on the phone that I had an additional page done (it didn't exist because I had forgotten about it) and told them I'd send it over after the call. Not only that, but the page was also a significant improvement upon the existing and other pages like it. I had no idea what they were talking about. Two hours later there it was.

Dude, there is no not faking it. Ever. You fake it every day and thats how you make it. That is how you grow as an adult when you work in a nebulous industry called design and there is no career path layer out for you neatly.
