I have an external just for backing up my desktop computer on time machine.
I assume y'all do this too. Do you keep the drive plugged in at all times or do you just plug in every week or so?
I don't anticipate a crash, but it could always happen.

I keep it plugged in as much as often as possible, in case something screwed up happens without warning, or if I save over a file. I can't even recall the last time I had to use TM to restore a file, though.

Plugged in all the time. Why would you unplug it?
I've had to use TM a few times, so def good to have.

Plugged in it is, didn't know if it lasted longer if it wasn't constantly in use or what.

How do you know if a drive fails, does it just stop working?

Keep it connected all the time. If it's a desktop why wouldn't you?
I'm always using TM. Indispensable tool. Even just to restore a single file that got accidentally written over earlier in the day. Or to quickly restore your preferences after a software install you're not happy with.

used to keep it plugged in all the time, but got annoying with the laptop.
but then I realized it uses unused HD space until you plug it in.
