What cities are you from that have a good cost of living?
A place where you can live in a convenient walkable area and get a 1 or 2 br for a good price?
Preferably a city with public transit. Portland? Philadelphia? Minneapolis?

no, all the good places are expensive, because there aren't many of them and everyone wants to live there.
There are hundreds of cities where you could get a 1 or 2 br for 100k, but not be able to walk anywhere. But with a $500 mortgage every month you can drive wherever you like. At the end of the day, you spend most of your time either at the computer or at work, so don't bust yourself trying to get the middle bit perfect.
Everything's overrated, settle for shit stuff in a shit place and you'll be happier than all those other people rushing round with the 'good stuff', which changes every 5 minutes.
I think I'm officially old.

Sacramento was pretty dang cheap, with access to lots of cool stuff if you just drive. It's getting more expensive soon though.

Above is last year's list of the cheapest cities in the U.S. Keep in mind that ranking methodologies can change from year to year based on what data was available at the time of publishing, changes to how the data was gathered, switches to new data providers and tweaks to the formulas used to narrow the pool of candidates.

Portland is nice. Maybe Denver? These are not cheapest places to live, but might be a nice balance between cost and quality of life. Both have great public transport.

Denver is pretty reasonable, but depends on your neighborhood. Easy city to get in/out of, plenty of options.
Probably the best quality of life for the money, Portland is probably pretty close too, but I haven't lived there is a long time.

Austin TX is cool apparently. May not be cheap though.

portland is being overdeveloped like nobody's business. google fiber is moving in, and there are three condo-plexes within five square blocks of my apartment going up in inner southeast (something like 500 new apartments in total) ... however, the rents for all of these start at about $1300 / mo (for a studio) ... it's fucking outrageous, my half of a 2br / 2ba here is $500. the california influence is just going to tear this city's economy in two.
- Where are people getting all this silly money for rent ?
