Hey the guys who switch from full frame canons to fuji's. What are your thought on corner sharpness on ultrawide angle lenses for it. I know the crop 10-22 from canon left a lot to be desired for sharpness especially in the corners. My whole reason for full frame was to have better glass options for wide angle.

How do you find the glass options comparable to canon? Limited with ranges, prices, third party support?

    • Dunno, just started...going from a D800 to M43. So far, the lenses have more to choose from and some superb glass.formed
    • ask me again in a few months :-)formed
    • oh, prices seem comparable enough, overall, maybe a little cheaper.formed
    • yea i was wondering if sigmas behave normally on pentax/sony/fujis. Looks like comparable brand glass is more expensive on thesedeathboy
    • or maybe im thinking of canon deal prices...deathboy
    • Fuji lenses are some of the best - up there with Leica glass. I wouldn't use anything else if jumping ship to Fuji.inteliboy
    • there's a bunch of third party XF lenses, I've had a few, B-grade chinese lenses like SLR Magic. And adapting other mounts is very hit and miss.inteliboy

Question for you guys. How long do you typically go between taking photos, and doing anything with them (excluding professional work on a timeline)?

I have hundreds if not a few thousand photos going back to 2009 that I haven't done anything with yet. I find something enjoyable about going back to look at them and edit them months or years after they were taken. I'm noticing that now particularly with candid street photos I started taking with my Fuji X70 back in April when I got it. I feel like I see them differently, almost disconnected from the timeframe around when they were taken and can look at them a bit more objectively to decide what to delete and what's worth going further with.

Anyone else suffer from and/or benefit from doing the same?

    • Usually I try to work on them right away. But sometimes I find my self editing photos from 2 3 years ago.pango
    • im very slow. got a lot of candles burning. got a few thousand backlog. if i catch up ill go back and probably cull more w/ fresh eyes. thing is some old onesdeathboy
    • on less than stellar glass and they look good until i zoom in and see the difference vs new glass. and makes me sad. good for online sharing thoughdeathboy
    • a week or two. If I don't get to them quickly they'll just stack up and I'll rarely go back.formed
    • I usually process and cull straight away, then file, backup and push my new fav's to my Apple TV shared folder so the appear in my screen saver.slappy
    • ..always in a non-destructive app like lightroom so I can re-process later.slappy

Mg33 do you keep a notebook of your shots?

    • Like you wouldn't believe. I have a Google Sheet that lists pretty much everything of significance I've shot since about 2010.mg33
    • Columns for: Edited (Y/N) and Posted to: Website, IG, Flickr, FB Photo Page, Printed, VSCO, etc.mg33
    • So when I'm in the mood, I can go through that list and immediately see what I haven't edited or posted anywhere yet. It's a great system.mg33
    • this guy is organized as hell.
i just use the flag and label system in lightroom. easier to search and filter for me.
      pango
    • wow..... that's quite a bit of work....vaxorcist

    BTW, another question:

I'm almost 95% sure I'm going to get rid of my Nikon gear and buy a Fuji XT2. I have an old Nikon D90 I don't use anymore, and a D610 full frame that I use as my main DSLR. Been using a Fuji X70 since April for my day-to-day camera and I've really fallen for the Fuji film simulations, and the simplicity of shooting JPG images as if I'm choosing film at the moment of shooting, rather than taking the RAW images into Lightroom for skys-the-limit editing.

The only thing I can see having trouble with on the XT2 is shooting bands in low light, which I don't do that often but want to have the best gear for. I've been looking at a lot of photos online of bands and see some good results, probably taken around f1.4 - f1.8 and with some noise/grain that looks perfectly fine on some of the simulations. I figure at 24MP, and ability to shoot RAW, I've at least got a comparable level of output to the D610, which is also 24MP.

Any thoughts? I think some of you have made DSLR > Fuji switches, correct?

    • the DSLR to fuji switcher i know of went crazy buying old m42 screw mount lenses... he loved the look of them on his fuji ....vaxorcist
    • I have the xt2. It's my fav go to cam. Get yourself the 56mm 1.4 xf lens. You'll never look back. This is from a guy that has 1dx mk2, 5ds, 5d3 xpro2... shit.RumperChunk
    • I spend way too much on cameras...RumperChunk
    • Good info, thanks.mg33

The reason I asked is because the one problem with waiting to process your photos is if you process them right away, there really isn't a need to take field notes on special treatment for problem photos bcuz the shoot is still fresh in your mind. I.e.: "IMG_xxxx will need perspective correction." In your case if you already take field notes, processing them 1 week or 10 years from now won't matter. HOWEVER all photos tend to lose relevancy the longer you wait. It's especially true of people. The same photo of Barak Obama while he's president might be almost worthless 4 years from now, during the end of a Trump presidency.

  • cherub1

Even if I know I won't process them right away, at the bare minimum I sort them into "best" , "keep" , and "maybe" folders asap. That way I'm not spending huge amounts of time later on trying to talk myself into liking photos that are "maybe" at best. I delete as many as I can stand. A photo that sucks now won't suck less 6 months from now.

Mg33 have you tried the various ways to organize photos in Lightroom?

    • Yes. Keywords for everything, larger groupings above such as Places, People, Clients, Types of Photos (textures, oceans, street, etc.)mg33
    • I review imported photos and apply a single star to good photos. As I edit them, change label to green.mg33
    • Then I go through green labels to pick best of those, change label to purple. Then from those, the ones I want to actually use, maybe 10-12 max, get blue labelsmg33
    • That way at any one time I can tell if I've selected or edited anything, and if I liked it enough to go further with.mg33
    • I rate stars 1-5. Edit only the 5's, but if I go back I look through the others. The 0's I never look at again. I use colors for specific purposesformed
    • Then I use the organization groups for specific purposes, like magazine publicationsformed
    • Lr is superb for this, what it was made for.formed
    • I also make folders w/in the date/imports: Edits, Finals, Small (edits are files with layers, Finals are high res export jpgs, Small is for FB, etc.)formed
    • All that and mg33 has a spread sheet on top of that! He's machine!!pango
    • I typically import into date folders. with varies keywords on batch or individuals. Then use collection folder for photos in the same projects but differentpango
    • dates. Stars for editing priorities. can't find a use for labels tho. i just key word everything.... lolpango
    • I do the same, but in Bridge instead (the stars and color label)Bennn

I have started using DJI's Ground Station Pro with my phantom 4 to automate large scale aerial photos, its free and works really well.

Basically you can create large 50-100mp landscape images from a birdseye view without having to do any piloting. Going to experiment on some nice semi abstract looking forest aerials next week.

I took the DSLR to Mirrorless step last year. Sold my Canon 60D and got a Fujifilm X-T1 with 3 lenses. Super cool camera.

Well.. it's still too heavy and bulky to carry. I'm really tired of carrying lenses and the X-T1 with lense on is still too heavy.

I moslty shoot when hiking and during long day walking and hike. And I noticed I almost exclusively shot pictures with my Samsung Galaxy S7 during the last 6 months... Wich makes amazing pictures for a "phone".

So, I think I'm ready to take the Mirrorless to Compact step. Its weird to think but I have to realize i dont bring my X-T1 kit anymore because of the weight.

After A LOT of reading on the web I'm currently lurking the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 V

    • Look at M43. The new Olympus/Panasonic's are really nice. Much, much smaller lenses, it's really quite amazing.formed
    • i dont want micro 4/3rdBennn
    • sensors are too smallBennn
    • Images and video are great, thoformed
    • Here ya go Ben

      ok_not_ok
    • whuuuut! Didnt see this one anywhere! thanksBennn
    • Why don't you consider a smaller fixed lens Fuji? Maybe the new X100F?
      https://fujilove.com…
      mg33
    • the X100F is interesting... but no touchscreen to move the focus point... its mendatory in 2017Bennn
    • I have the touch screen focus on my X70 and turned it off the first day I had it. It's hugely annoying.mg33
    • Curious - if you're getting a camera with a viewfinder, why the interest in touch screen focus? I fee like choosing single point, zone, or wide tracking shouldmg33
    • always get you close to what you want if you're framing your shots appropriately.mg33
    • on new camera you can chose the focus point while watching in the viewfinder, there's a name for this, its the new hypeBennn
    • Hype.mg33
    • yeah but its very useful, saw many photographer on youtube stating how useful it isBennn

Hey guys, what do you think about LG 29UM57 - https://www.bestadvisor.com/best…
Is it good enough for photo edition? I am a beginner, do not know a lot about photography, just need a quality monitor to edit photos made by professional camera.

  • Bennn0

I'm reading articles about cameras since a week now, i've made a loooot of reading!

I'm almost at the end of my thinking about what should I use to take pictures. The weights is the main concern for me, but I also want to be able to take good quality pictures.

I take pictures mostly in the wilderness when hiking. I like ultra-wide angle shot, tele-zoom shot and some macro... that's a problem because I want to do everything... and the only to do this is with multiple lenses; that mean weight, lots of weight.

And since I'm using mostly my phone since 6 months to take pictures, with amazing results, really. I think I may go with :

    Canon G7 X Mark II

    20 mgpixels
    1″ (13.2 x 8.8 mm) sensor size
    24–100 mm
    F1.8–2.8
    31 focus points
    Touchscreen
    319g weight

and with all the money i'll make by selling all my photography stock, i want this :

    Sony RX10 Mark III

Its a bridge camera. never tought I would ever get a bridge! But the more I read about it, the more I want it! I often go bird watching with my gf and that camera would be perfect for this. No lense to change, combined with the Canon G7X, i'll be able to shoot many different thing. Perfect on trip too.

    20 mgpixels
    1″ (13.2 x 8.8 mm) sensor size
    24–600 mm
    F2.4–4
    25 focus points
    4K video with ultra slow-mo
    Environmentally sealed

Now i just need to sell my Fuji X-T1 and 3 lenses... my Canon G16 and my Canon SL1 and 3 other Canon lenses.

Anyone have some suggestions on pricing photos for sale? I've had someone approach me about a photo on Flickr that they'd like to buy to print as a mural of some kind, requesting minimum 2,500 pixel height (it's a landscape format image).

Compared to, say, offering actual prints for sale, any suggestions on pricing strictly for a digital file? \

    • offer to print it for them and charge accordingly. I'd be wary of sending a hires file.Gnash
    • Yeah, use Zenfolio/etc. to set it up. It'll charge the appropriate taxes too.

Charge as much as you can get!
      formed

    • They want to print it as a mural at 88 inches wide by 98 inches tall to cover an entire wall in their house.mg33

(Probably an amateur) Photography question: Is this heavy UV filtering to produce this sort of effect on direct sunlight in a photo? I think it's a great photo, but I'm specifically curious about this effect. Thanks!

    • uv filter + grad filter + very high fstop to create sun star & everything in focus. Or bracketed HDR in camera option. Both using heavy color editing in post.HijoDMaite
    • Exactly what I was looking for Hijo, ¡gracias amigo!BuddhaHat
