Perhaps they should just print less shit?

Read this article this morning and was really impressed. Next he needs to focus on the associated waste with Comic Sans in everything to do with children, both monetary waste and style waste.
- i waited for it. the comic sans joke.ohhhhhsnap

The BBC changed their logo and typefaces in 1997 to Gill Sans and only black and as a results saved a load of cash on printing in teh process... Eastenders still remained shit though...

I seem to recall this kind of study doing the rounds a few years back with Century Gothic the recommended choice.

Good luck convincing an industrial printer to charge less because of less ink coverage. Printers charge per ink type, number of colors and paper stock, not ink volumes. Place an order for a 10 page booklet and the cost will be the same if it was all in Times New Roman or if it was all in Garamond, or even if it was all in Helvetica Ultra Thin.
On the other hand, for a school project the idea is groundbreaking since that teacher will save lots of money from the office depot costs on printing supplies for their laser copies.

A better idea: have someone design a typeface that would optimize legibility and ink usage.

reduce font size by 1 pt and save 10% on ink and paper!
reduce by 10pts and save 100%!

Convert everything to Braille, never waste a cent on ink again!

If they were really committed, they'd use some kind of hairline stencil sans-serif. Or just whisper it onto the wind.

Fuck ink costs - crowdsource the design.

Maybe this is a good time to talk to clients about how often the costs of designer fees are soooo much less than the cost of printing or reprinting everything due to an error....

That's stupid. You save that much on ink, not necessarily in general. Pointless fact when it's a drop in the bucket. Try using different materials. More impact.
