- Very cool!instrmntl
- Is the fireplace to code, or are you going rogue? Looks great, btwGnash
- Love this design. Nice one. Wanting to do something very similar at some point in the near future.bogue
- Looks good, I hope it smells better than the shipping containers I've been inspot13
- I'm super pumped about it. Once it's all set up I'll report back in this thread and post some real pics.letterhead
- is this a prefab company? what do they charge ballpark?_niko
- @_niko they build them in their own space and deliver them to site. This will set me back ~$55k. Cheaper than a house addition.letterhead
- Is that cheaper than just building it out of wood?scarabin
- Yes wood is super expensive these days. Containers are 2-4k used or 5k+ new.AQUTE
- did you look on aliexpress or alibaba?AQUTE
- what company did it?Hayoth
- thanks Letterhead! good luck and share pics when complete!_niko

- Nice...where is the toilet?utopian
- WIll this be set on a concrete pad / foundation? Is it your responsibility to have that completed before delivery?imbecile
- No toilet or running water, that would require more extensive permitting. The company installs the unit using diamond pier footings.letterhead
- thanksimbecile

- Wood just plummetted, construction numbers are not what they were a few months ago...and it's going down.formed

- looks amazing! would love to have the same in our garden but we live in a conservation area so would have to settle for something a bit smaller ;)microkorg
- i wanted one of these things soooo bad..
but we went with a pool instead... now theres no room for something like that...
pretty happy with the pool tho ;)exador1 - Build it elevated over top of the pool. You can do cannonballs off the topmonNom

A really good article on "Prefab Architecture" prefabrication vs. shipping container construction and design.
- dopeprophetone
- [at least] $200/sf puts this price in custom home territory and doesn't save a penny off of site built...the ongoing problem with prefabformed
- $150-$200/sf Prefab vs.
$300-350/sf Traditionalutopian - $300-350 for a sfr is insane, that'd be costs for multimillion $ virtually no expense spared. $200 gets you what these homes have.formed

I liked the initial novelty of repurposing those things, but the majority of these - in this thread - would probably be cheaper to build without the container. they look as if the designers only use a container so they can be all, "look at my awesome container build!"
- <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<...PonyBoy
- What and how will it be cheaper to build without container? Source please?organicgrid
- lol - you are missing the pointfadein11
- utter gashfadein11
- I think a major point in using containers is they are strong as fuck, storm resistance on a budget.ZOOP
- For many this is not a novelty, up recycling, 40-60-% cheaper than building a traditional house, and weather proof.organicgrid
- The cost is comparable to regular stick construction. By the time you clean, insulate, cut, etc., you'll exceed regular costsformed

- they do: http://www.boklok.co…
Doesn't look that nice, thoformed - This isn't a "cheap" solution, though, you could build this w/o any containers just as easilyformed
- no gutters?ohhhhhsnap
- flat roofs drain to a corner (slopped on top), there is a small parapet of sorts. It would just look horrible with gutter!formed
- much cheaper than any conventional house to build by at least 40%.organicgrid
- No way. Show me the numbers. The prefab I've worked on was comparable in every aspectformed

You can also invest in those things.
I have bought some shiny new shipping containers, an external company handles the leasing to shipping companies, 6% safe interest, fixed surrender value after five years.
- really? that's kinda coolGnash
- How is this working you for you, mekk?Nairn
- ^ It's been total shit. I invested nearly 70k € with P&R in Munich, which turned out to be one of the largest investment bankruptcies in Germany.mekk
- Nearly everything gone, got a lousy sum back from the bankruptcy assets.mekk
- Did you get a container at least?Gnash
- Oh God, I'm so sorry - I wish I'd not asked, Mekk!Nairn
- No, I didn't buy containers directly, just invested in some kind of fund that owns these. Rumors are nearly 60% of the claimed containers never existed.mekk
- It was going on for more than 40 years and was dependent on new investors, kinda like a Ponzi Scheme. Even carried a lot of trutstworthy consultants with themmekk
- as a lot of them got sued. I'm glad I'm still young and can earn that money back but yeah it's a big loss. I learned to spread my investmens better acrossmekk
- different risk levels and different industries/investmen... products. Haven't experienced a loss since then.mekk

just searched for the average price of a container. They sell pretty cheap actually, like 1000€ - 2500€ depending on the condition.

- In the U.S. the cost of a 40 Ft shipping containers: 2-4kutopian
- these are 20', 40's are usually more than twice that, but yeah habitable legos ftw.kingsteven
- I can remember older relatives cursing the invention of containers because they cost so many jobs in the shipyardskingsteven
- they were also the end of bootlegging, instead of smaller wooden boxes, whole shipments locked up to the destination.kingsteven
