Let's say you have $600 to spend on a tablet. Is iPad the best option? Or some Android tablet of some kind?

I've been resisting the iPad urge, just because I have an iphone and 3 computers (as much as I want it, I don't need it). If I had that money available to spend on a toy (cause that's what the ipad is) I would go on ebay and try to hunt for an mpc 1000 used.
I would get the ipad mini, just because I like using osx. and because I could control ableton and modul8 via osc wirelessly. My buddy has it set up for modul8 and he was controlling visuals from the bar, which is very cool.
No matter how powerful or beautiful or light the competition is, I'm done with windows. So I have no other option.
Disclosure: I'm not really a fanboy, because I don't LOVE mac. but I do dislike windows a lot, so my opinion is biased.
- What about android tablets :O
Yeh windows is a bit of a bitch lolHombre_Lobo - miguex, i posted this in makin beats, the elusive $125 mpc is out there buddy. http://www.qbn.com/t…prophetone

I love my iPad 2, so would recommend an iPad. But that's if you like ios7 (I don't like it and keep my iPad on ios6).
When I bought tablet more than couple of years ago iPads were the best tablets as android were not up to the same standard. But now I would definitely consider an android tablet. I have a nexus 4 running android jelly bean and I'd love a tablet running android os.
It's more a question of what ecosystem you prefer.

if you dig making beats you really should avoid android. I haven't seen one good music app on android. I had a nexus 7 and ipads. IOS has all the music apps

iPad air just came out too... thinking on it.

Music would be good...I also want to try this idea even though it's probably impractical :)

I'd say, if you don't want iPad, then Nexus 7 or Nexus 10. Love my Nexus 7.

iPad hands down.

iPad Air vs iPad 2? Are there real differences or just the weight?
- set0
I know it's been done to death but my ipad mini used to be feel like a real premium product, since updating to iOS 7 it honestly feels like a cheep knockoff re-skinned by a deviantart member. Such a shame.
iPad still has the best hardware imo, although the xperia z tablet looks good.

I prefer the size of the ipad mini overall. I tested it against a nexus 7 and while the nexus was a nice little tablet, the letterbox screen aspect ratio is not great, the ipad for the screen size alone is superior.
For me, if I wanted the bigger tablets, it would be between an iPad and the Sony Xperia Z tablet. I think I'd go with the xperia.

Don't get a non Retina!

- Dunno, I notice very little difference between my old and new iPads (which I gave to my folks)formed
- retina is a con, and a joke. You can literally only notice it if your eyes are an inch or two from the screen.set
- that's not exactly true, it's incredibly evident when trying to read type at any distancemonospaced

I was going to go mini (have been holding out for retina), but since they've announced iPad Air, the thin bezel making it ~3/4" more narrow and light weight seems to be the way to go.
Aside from internet browsing and movies and general iPad stuff, need something to read books on, which I can comfortably hold with 1 hand on the train ride to work without getting wrist fatigue.

^ ipad mini will now be retina
- ernexbcn0
The difference is staggering between retina and non retina (even on the mini) I can't believe people on a design board are saying it's not.
Besides getting an iPad 2 in late 2013 is wasting money.
- if set says it's a con, it's a con, how can you possibly argue with that?monospaced
- LO-fucking-Lmonospaced
- Set's law.set
- I had an iphone retina and ipad mini and you can only tell the difference from an inch or two awayset
- you need to get your eyes checked then, methinks (sorry)monospaced
- 20/20set
- Then you should see a difference. Everyone else does, even my friend's 3yr old daughter bitches when she has non-retinamonospaced
- she has to use the non-retina iPad.monospaced
- that child is a cuntset

ive not seen an ipad mini, but my gf has an ipad 3 and i have an ipad 2 and I despise using hers... because mine looks like a grainy piece of shit after i use it.
same with my phone (nexus 4), nice high res screen then I go back to old school ipad 2 at 1024 x 768 and its not v pretty. still really like it though.
