A client needs me to add a clicktag to a banner. Been a long time since ive done this. Looks like this just gets added to a button, but the issue is I already have a tracking link that the banner need to click out to.
Cant have 2 links on one button right? Little confused.

Depends on the target network, what it will allow. But yes you can pull off multiple clicktag instances usually. Check the network specs, also see if it subscribes to IAB standards first, look at those for guidance as well.

From a UX standpoint, having one button doing two diff things is prob not a good idea.

So basically if the client sent me a tracking url, clicktag replaces that, right?

A clicktag will be tracked on the network with its own metrics. If your target URL is some interstitial trackable URL (client side) that pitches the user to the client URL then you only need the ad unit to have a single clicktag.

Clicktag is implemented in the ad unit. The network is told what URL to target, that's basically it. Clicktag is tracked and sounds like your target URL is being tracked specifically for this ad. Prob auto redirects to the client www.

Ok so this clicktag code has an http in it. Thats where my tracking link goes that the client sent me, right? Or do you not use a tracking link there, and just a normal url to their site?
on (release) {
if (_root.clickTAG.substr(0,5) == "http:") {
getURL(_root.clickTAG, "_blank");
}
}- That statement is checking to see if the first 5 characters are http:duckseason

@duck, so I dont put my tracking link there?
- This whole thing is confusing to me. The client sent me a tracking link, then today they ask me to add a clicktag to it.CygnusZero4

You implement this. Then you tell the network contact what your URL is. They put that in the system and the URL is auto inserted into the ad unit on the fly. It's like this so you can mod the target URL later without sending in a new ad unit.

^ Ahhhh, got it now. So the tracking link gets implemented elsewhere, NOT in the Flash. That was really throwing me off.

People get really confused by this. The clicktag is just a generic tag that gets injected/swapped when it's running on the network.
- Its probably been a good 5 years since Ive done this. Totally forgot how it worked.CygnusZero4
- well it's confusing at the best of times, and even if a network complies with IAB it can still have its own rulesprophetone

What prophetone says, but here's a breakdown of what it is to make it clearer. Essentially, clickTag is so that you don't have to hardcode a URL inside of Flash and have to republish the FLA if you want to change the URL later on. It's a variable whose value can be changed outside of Flash via FlashVars in the object/embed tag.
You just add the clickTag.
AS2> getURL(_root.clickTag, "_blank"); which goes onto the button onRelease function.You don't need the http stuff, I never add that in.
The tracking link is what gets sent to the trafficking/media team (or the site that's hosting the ad, if there isn't a separate team for that). That's what the clickTag will point to and the window it will spawn when the button is clicked.
