Just had a debate with my housemate about democracy and how we all apparently have a choice. Maybe we do at home and we can choose what we're having for dinner, but on a political level I argued we don't. I think everything is almost automatically in place and we don't really get much say in how our countries (UK & US) are generally run. We get a choice between two governing parties and that's it. Fair enough, compared to China, we're doing okay, but how far realistically are we away from them politically?
I'm drunk, and drunken debates are always the best right?!!

Drunken debates usually start WAY worse than this.
Carry on.

Democracy: two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner.

You get to vote for different faces of the same coin.

Democracy of late seems more of how long can we endure fighting against the passing of ridiculous laws.

True but I think the majority of fascist christian psychos left England and came here and fucked everything up.
I know England has its own shit going on but I twas wondering how you think racism is in England? Has it gotten better? Its seems to me that it has gotten much more racially diverse.

You get to vote.
Each party consists of people who have organised themselves into a group with a common interest this interest and goal may fall in line with what you believe in. You vote for the closes to what your values may be at the time.
This is clear and fair democracy.
If you want something else you must take the time to organise yourself into a willing and committed party, if you want to change something in particular you should write to your MP and raise a question in the gallery and push for your party to change what you don't like.
Again this is democracy in it's purest form. Something Westerners bathe in freely yet still find time to complain and moan about.

"Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%."

I support Plato's idea of republic.
A Philosopher King should decide what's better for the society.
