Was thinking of picking up one of those new LED TV to use mainly as a bigger second monitor and occasionally use for movies/gaming, but friend brought up the idea of getting a projector instead (so they can watch movies on rooftop). Noticed that the "video projectors" (720p / 1080p) are all at least $1000+ while the ones normal classroom uses (running XGA) are only around $300... Is getting the XGA one good enough for most purpose? My current monitor is at 1920x1080 and even then I didn't think it's that sharp - sounds kinda weird to go all the way back to 1024x768? Is this a downgrade?

No
- It is a downgrade of a massive scale. Waste of money.monospaced

yup, I would rather get the TV man
or else you'll always be forced to working in the dark with a projector

i had lots of fun using my projector as a second screen. it's pretty fun to set up, wherever you want to watch movies. check on lamp prices, as i had to replace a $190 lamp every year for the project. i wish i still had it, but decided that it wasn't worth it for its third replacement. though much has changed since, and today's projectors are cheaper, smaller, cooler looking than they once were. for gaming and movies, I don't think resolution will be a problem. getting big ass screen on any wall is awesome.
- popcorn and beers on the rooftop watching movies... kickass!omg

Projector is a great investment for gaming and movies as it gives a much more immersed experience and makes it more special than playing on the same screen that you use to watch morning tv on.
Lights off, popcorn and cozy up with the gf on the sofa. They are pretty low res though and I wouldn't advise using it to do design work on really as colours won't be completely accurate.
A lot of music studios use them as an extra screen though.
I used to have a projector for years, had a 92" screen on my living room wall. Sold it last year when I moved to a smaller apartment.
Greatest gadget ever IMO.

I got one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Optoma-H…
It's impressive for films and probably for gaming. I use it as a second monitor just so I can be watching a film while doing some work. Resolution is decent but don't be expecting any decent colour reproduction.

Thanks guys - think will just stick with a monitor for everyday use. Besides the rate I use these I'll probably have to change the bulb every year... screw that.
May still just get a cheap one to host rooftop party if they go on sale - just saw this one from BenQ that goes for under $300 and runs at XGA...

so you're sitting on a rooftop watching a film projected onto what?
another building?

yeah my building is sandwich between 2 taller building - since there are already graffiti on the sides I thought of just using those projector screen paint and project movies/games onto it.
the idea of all this happening during the summer is amazing - but gotta think of ways of bankrolling all this + setting up the audio too... should be a good project if I got $ left after getting a new screen
