So I've taken the big step of purchasing a 15" MacBook Pro retina and I have to say so far I love it. My one question though and I did some looking into this before I brought it. "What resolution should i run it at?" Currently i'm going for the 1680x1050 but are there any performance related issues etc?
What resolution do you run yours at?

Should run at the same resolution as the screen really (or whats the point?).
There are a few performance concerns because the resolution is just so huge for the system behind it.
- the point would be to save on size, what else would be the point in having such a large resolution on a 15' screen?Miguex

The default/recommended setting is best isn't it? (not scaled), so it uses higher res where appropriate?
- I mean it is effectively 'multi-resolution' isn't it?ribit

I run 1680x1050 and I haven't had any problems so far.
Btw, you should install this, it saves you a lot on battery time:

Have one too, running it at 1900x1200
Love the screen, and its super fast!
For retouching raw images in lightroom its a blessing!

I've had my 13" retina MBP for a few weeks now. I run it at a scaled resolution that's one notch up from the tiniest setting (largest pixel resolution, tiniest text size).
But I love the fact that the scaled resolution can give me so much screen real estate when I need it. That's one of the reasons that I bought the machine in the first place.
I haven't noticed any performance issues with running the scaled resolution, but I've never compared it to running the native resolution.

Got a new Macbook Pro the other day and retina screens are the shit! so funny seeing my gf's one next to it now, I can't use hers without seeing pixels.
It has made me want a 4K TV more now knowing when its home I'll notice a huge difference with that also.
- TV is different though, because you're mostly looking at moving images, not text. Harder to see pixels while images flash at 120hznb

retina is the only way now. love mine. to the future!

I have a 13" and I will say that what sys.pref. prescribes as 'best for retina' feels great in the browser, but just too damn big for everything else.

Never understood why everyone goes nuts about retina screens. Serious image retouching is just not possible with it.

I use it on the largest setting so I can fit more things on the screen, I don't mind the graphics being so small. For web/ print stuff you won't notice performance issues, even with multiple applications open at the same time.
However, I noticed that when I'm REALLY pushing the laptop running modul8 / madmapper mixing 1080 clips while in the sun, you can see a noticeable difference in speed/ performance if I switch to "actual size" over "More Space", and also "minimize" background apps that I don't need to see at that moment.
Like, the difference in speed is HUGE, like I skip playback frames unless I don't adjust settings, so the performance issues are there, perhaps you don't notice them unless you really push the graphics part.
