Yeah there's something seriously fucked about Australia. Every time I travel it blows my mind how cheap everything is.

I've just spent a Christmas-month back in the UK (Leeds) and returning to Aus, the cost difference on is unreal. I went to Waitrose and thought how cheap it all was...

$800 / €600 / for 3 double bed house in Sheffield, UK. Back garden. Share with 2 others, so per person its not much at all.
Awesome coffee shop and fresh fruit/veg locally. less than 1 hr to Manchester, 2 hrs to London. Wouldn't live anywhere else.

I wondering what the salaries are like in Australia.
if you pay $3k but earns >$9k, than it's pretty much the same as other cities.

i'm genuinely surprised at the rent levels in Australia. I live in Cardiff at the minute and I have a 2 bed house that I share with my partner.
yea cardiff is not new york but still, 10 minute bike to town, 10 minute bike to work. 1 hour drive to amazing beaches (when sunny) and 1 hour to amazing mountains for hiking etc., 2 hour train to london.
My rent is about 12% of my monthly salary.

That said, I'm 3 tube stops from the city centre and the five from the office, and the whole thing takes me round about 15 minutes, so I'm not exactly in the boonies, either.
- Hence why I pay a small fortune on rent, and food.Continuity

Speaking of overpriced island,
1100 BD 2 bedrooms semi furnished (fully equipped kitchen, 2 ikea beds, 2 bean bags, satellite HDTV & internet + 2 times a week cleaning guy). Share it with our project manager who happens to know some Lebanese & Persian girls make Kim like a cheap knock off. Wouldn't complain, but coming from Asia, I do miss all the mountains & rain & greens.

@sine:
Fair enough, but in all honesty, the hotspots in our industries (advertising, design, digital, etc) mostly also happen to be in tourist-, business- and popular city centres; whether it's NY, London, Paris, Amsterdam, et cetera. Which kind of makes things an absolute for us, because if we want to get ahead in our careers, then cities like this are a must.
Naturally, there are exceptions, it's not everyone who wants to work on big brands, win a Lion and all that, but still.
I just wish salaries were more commensurate with the reality of living in these sorts of places.
- People who pay crazy amounts on rent obviously make a shit ton more money than those who don't.monospaced
- lost me at "win a Lion"
win a Lion?moldero

AU $1300 per month (3 bedroom house, with a smallish kitchen plus a an outdoor laundry and extra room)
I do live about 30km from the CBD, though only 1km from the beach.

^ but in general it's all relative...
the closer you are to a cultural-, tourist-, business hub or popular city centre, etc the more you pay. rent in my area is almost twice as much as what my colleague pays for a house in the suburbs with a garden. but she gets up at 5 to travel and be at work by 7 then drives an hour and a half back in the afternoon.
i'm 5 minutes from the city centre, 2 blocks from the beach and 15 minutes from my office.

Holy shit. So, basically, the take-away here is that we all pay shitloads on rent.
And, if one lives in Australia, one basically blows most of one's salary on housing. Wow.
- Ask us how much more we pay for beers, or the internet, or just about anything. It's a fucking rip-off!!!MrT
