Get 27 inch because it has the highest ppi (2560x1440).
If you want great quality for a bargain, look ebay for Korean IPS display. They were $400, but maybe a little higher now. Also, do not buy before CES, prices usually fall after the event.

If you don't mind used, for an extra $100 you can get the Apple 24".

I went with a dell 30" this time around, had a samsung 30" before and went thru hell and high water when it died after a year to get it replaced under warranty, just to have the next one die after a year. So far the dell has been great, picture is a little better, better controls, lasted over a year, and hopefully warranty will be easier.
IMO, Definitely look for IPS panels if you are gonna do design work on it, high view angles 178deg x 178deg, the more contrast the better. My 2 cents anywho.

I also went with the Dell 30". I LOVE it. Last Dell monitor lasted 9+ years (first gen 24").
I would highly recommend it, though the price is twice+ what you want to spend.
I'll still recommend the Dells, though, given my experience with them. A friend has a Asus 27" that he likes, but is still in awe of my Dell.
Go read CNET and other reviews. Go to www.techbargains.com and find a good coupon. There are great deals out there.

yeah, i'd say dell. i've only heard good things about them...
but truth be told, i've been mainly working off a macbook attached to a shit viewsonic 30", and it works well enough.

Are there any specific Dell models I should look for? I'm going this weekend and want to check a few...

I've been buying inferior monitors for many years, because I did not want to pony up to the $1000 that a cinema display costs. I have since bit the bullet and bought a 27" Thunderbolt and it's the best fucking monitor I've ever used. Believe the hype.

Here's a deal for you, buy it now:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell…That's $400 off the Dell site (and $200 less than I paid about 3 months ago).
While not gorgeous, it looks just fine and I prefer black to any other color, esp for editing work.
*Your welcome* :-)
