i use mail chimp. it gets wonky on me if the i design/code on my imac and a fellow employee opens on PC. a bunch of garbled code gets placed into the e-blast. its rather weird. overall, though pretty simple to use.

I haven't charged the client yet. Doing my research before I quote or I agree to anything.
Client's contact list is 100% kosher. His people have been signing up via a Mailchimp subscribe list so far, so we're on track with karma.

How much did you charge the client?

one thing to watch.... an email campaign can cost you some karma and reputation points if your client has given you a dodgy list full of bouncing emails and/or from "unknown sources"... MailChimp is pretty emphatic about where your list comes from, and if more than a few percent bounce, or they get complaints, they are not happy.
One approach is to make the client take responsiblity for signing up for a mailchimp account.
Mailchimp is concerned about this not just because they're web people, but also because they have carefully cultivated business with gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc so as to not end up in spam folders...
- yes, mailchimp gives you a stern lecture at the import stage but ultimately allows you to up a csv. no funny business!prophetone

Campaign Monitor has great examples and resources for templates:

(most of these are tested on the majority of mail clients)

Can anyone recommend a starting place for designing & coding my town template, rather than using their simple wizard tools?

Have you guys been importing your own templates or creating them in-system?

Another +1 for Campaign Monitor. Great to work with.

I use Constant Contact and iContact on a monthly basis for a few clients - they're all about the same except for slight differences in pricing.

just to be difficult i'd say choose campaign monitor over mail chimp.

Music to my big dumb ears. Thank you.

btw, i don't work for mailchimp but if need cheep nikes i'm ur guy.

seriously, I chose the best one for my needs, monkeyed around with it to my liking and had it ready within 20 mins. then tested it, etc.

it's pretty easy. they provide a huge list of templates, all with different layouts that will accommodate varying needs for your content. so if you have a main pic and three small feature boxy pics then there are templates that can handle that nicely. you just upload your art into each position and tweak, then tweak the colours and add in the logo and voilà.

^ there's only so much you can do w/an email blast... but know the templates on Chimp are UBER EASY to work with...

Excellent. Thanks!
Did you get very in depth in fiddling with template styles? If so, what was hard?
