This is just fucking EPIC! So stoked for my hometown buddy Corey Arnold that just finished this project. Over the past year he visited 15 National Parks to photograph for this story for National Geographic. Now he has the cover story of the October 2016 issue.
"Can the Selfie Generation Unplug and Get Into Parks"
Written by: Timothy Egan
Photos: Corey Arnold- very coolkona
- So rad! I have a subscription. One of the few publications left of high journalistic quality. Looking forward to checking it out.nocomply
- yeah this story really motivated me. i'm planning a trip to Joshua Tree as we speak.HijoDMaite

Newb question:
Does anyone know a good spot in California where I can disappear for a few days and do what @klar has done on this thread?
Tent camping
Open fire
Fishing
Cook fresh fish- up in the sierra somewhere?hans_glib
- ^That would be my guess too. Near Mammoth maybe.lemmy_k
- Lone Pine, Mt Whitney area are bunchesjaylarson
- if you have the time, head further north and know what you're fishing of coursecanoe
- Yeah I always figured Eastern Sierras. Was hoping closer, 4 hrs isn’t bad though.HijoDMaite
- Seconding Lone Pine. Visit the Alabama Hills while you're there.garbage
- Oh forgot the obligatory Godspeed Hijo.garbage
- I just posted a link above to Hungry Packer Lake. It's awesome, E. Sierras goodness. You might even be able to 1up klar on the photos. :)mathinc
- I believe it's permit required. Lovely place tho.mathinc
- Yup, lots of different fishing regulations depending on area.HijoDMaite
- Lost coast highway.BH26
- A lot of hike-in areas in the Sierras forbid open fires, but at the same time, are so incredibly remote that nobody will enforce it. Kings Canyon is a good placmonospaced
- Eastern Sierras are awesome!HijoDMaite
- South Fork Kern River. That is where you want. Backpacking, open fires allowed, fishing, camping, etc. Eastern Sierras, only have fires in actual campsites.capn_ron
- Look up Kennedy Meadows Campground as a launching piont. South of Lone Pine by about 60 miles.capn_ron

Although I didn't have any luck with the fish, last Saturday I got out to this park by 7am on a beautiful Saturday morning. It was the kind of morning where I just appreciated the silence, the lack of wind, and the serenity.
- klar4
- I don't get to fish for trout, what kind of bait are you using?Al_dizzle
- you bastard. lovely looking spot :)Gnash
- Happen to see bigfoot?Gnash
- I was fishing with dark wet flies ( sculpzilla, bead head, leach) on a regular casting pole. I also had a inflatable boat by Klymit that weighs 35 oz.klar
- decent trout, must've tasted awesome, nothing better than fresh.AK_tiv47
- Want this nowHijoDMaite
- klar3
- inflatable? were you in one spot or movingGnash
- it was a Klymit Litewater Dinghy. cheep on amazon 130$ 35 oz . I hiked about 9 hours to get this lake. some off trail. stayed here for 5 nights :]klar
- beautiful :)Gnash
- Do you know of a spot in California where I can do this.HijoDMaite
- theres got to be tons of places near Paige and Lone Pine in the E Sierrras, hijojaylarson
- Hungry Packer Lake is a great backpack trip where you can pluck trout out of the water with a simple pole and crickets: http://www.davessier…mathinc

Hijo, for future trips, backpacking or just camping:
Look up Kennedy Meadows Campground as a launching point. South of Lone Pine by about 60 miles.- Current conditions: Closed. Bummer. I am heading that way in Sept.I was hoping for a new stop.lemmy_k
- Thanks capn !HijoDMaite
- lemmy, if you go in september it should be good. warmer weather and freezing cold river to fish in. i backpacked a month ago therecapn_ron

- Lucky you, I was there 3 years ago, very beautiful.Maaku

Some bullshit video I made a few years ago. My friend has since moved to Silver City, NM and I'm in NW Michigan now. Kinda sucks because he's like a brother to me, but the good thing is we're making bigger plans and he finally got laid out there.
If you're interested in what it's like to paddle in the southern Everglades, check out this vid.
- I went kayaking on vacation in Florida last year. Finally prompted me to buy my own kayak and get out with my son. Were in So Cal, but at least we are outside.lemmy_k
- What are you paddling, sit on top tandem or did you get into some serious sea kayaks. I understand SoCal paddling requires some planning due to the watercanoe
- I picked up a tandem sit on top used. I stay away from the waves since my son is only 10. We go to back bay or Huntington Harbor. We also go to June Lake.lemmy_k
- Sit on top tandems are the best, so easy... have fun!canoe
- Hey Canoe, where about in NW Michigan, Traverse City?ShenanigansTV
- Yah - TCcanoe
- Gnash0
- i wish bear grylls would just fuck off and diehans_glib
- yeah, just fuck off and die somewhere, in the woods, with just a knife and loads of survival skills and... er, that's not going to work.Fax_Benson
- lol, faxGnash
- He'll die when the bell boy at the hotel he's staying at instead of actually being in the wilderness crushes him with his own luggage cart.see_thru

I just picked up a kayak last week, when this holiday season work dies down a bit I'm hoping to load it up with my fish killing weapons and take it out to the islands and murder some beautiful tropical fish so they can live in my freezer as solid bricks of frozen fish flesh.

- I don't think a six seater qualifies as being outdoors.tryother
- How much do you pay people to show up at your gig?canoe
- Fo' fitty.tryother
- So you just joined QBN... in January... so you can troll. Feels douchey... am I right?canoe
- I'm genuinely sorry you felt trolled by my comment as a new member. I will make sure to avoid you in the future. Enjoy your day.tryother

- Moldero, we had 20 portages on this trip, some of theme were long and beaver dammed, some of them were straight up silly - log piles!canoe
- sweet -- where'd ya go?Gnash
- Huh? Portaging like that on these rickets, not so sweet, but Pigeon River, MI was too pretty to complain about. Each year I paddle a new river at home in MI.canoe
- nice, canoe. I try and do the same here in ontario. I'd love to try MI some time.Gnash
- UKV1
Im such an outdoor junkie I run a site to keep track of my addiction... er, trips. Skiing, kayaking, backpacking, fly fishing, mountain climbing, big game hunting. Totally hopeless.

Any QBNers has ever made the Pacific Crest Trail or thinks about doing it? Or any other thru hike experiences?
- Does the Inka Trail count?canoe
- Sure, you made it? How many days? Km/miles?Bennn
- It was a 7 day-er, and yes made it there, and man the day you get there you have to scale a wall without touching the wall, so it's like the steepest stairs evecanoe
- ever, and they are slimy, wet, mossy and it's 5am and scary as hell.canoe
- Other than than, pure blisscanoe
- nice! The Pacific Crest Trail is tempting, its 5 months of walk tho... complicated with work and shitBennn
- It’s on my bucket listHijoDMaite
- I'm available for a week, not 5 months, don't forget your fleshlight, I mean...canoe
- on my bucket list too Hijo, maybe we will cross path there ;)Bennn
- i've done a lot of the eastern sierras/inyo and sequioa sections in separate trips. one day the whole thing. looks like a beast.capn_ron
