This is just fucking EPIC! So stoked for my hometown buddy Corey Arnold that just finished this project. Over the past year he visited 15 National Parks to photograph for this story for National Geographic. Now he has the cover story of the October 2016 issue.
"Can the Selfie Generation Unplug and Get Into Parks"

Newb question:
Does anyone know a good spot in California where I can disappear for a few days and do what @klar has done on this thread?
Tent camping
Open fire
Fishing
Cook fresh fish- up in the sierra somewhere?hans_glib
- ^That would be my guess too. Near Mammoth maybe.lemmy_k
- Lone Pine, Mt Whitney area are bunchesjaylarson
- if you have the time, head further north and know what you're fishing of coursecanoe
- Yeah I always figured Eastern Sierras. Was hoping closer, 4 hrs isn’t bad though.HijoDMaite
- Seconding Lone Pine. Visit the Alabama Hills while you're there.garbage
- Oh forgot the obligatory Godspeed Hijo.garbage
- I just posted a link above to Hungry Packer Lake. It's awesome, E. Sierras goodness. You might even be able to 1up klar on the photos. :)mathinc
- I believe it's permit required. Lovely place tho.mathinc
- Yup, lots of different fishing regulations depending on area.HijoDMaite
- Lost coast highway.BH26
- A lot of hike-in areas in the Sierras forbid open fires, but at the same time, are so incredibly remote that nobody will enforce it. Kings Canyon is a good placmonospaced
- Eastern Sierras are awesome!HijoDMaite
- South Fork Kern River. That is where you want. Backpacking, open fires allowed, fishing, camping, etc. Eastern Sierras, only have fires in actual campsites.capn_ron
- Look up Kennedy Meadows Campground as a launching piont. South of Lone Pine by about 60 miles.capn_ron

@ HijoDMaite
I have no clue about any lakes in California :\
Find a lake you want to go to and note the forest service region its in. Call the forest service up and ask them to give you the number of the fish biologist for that region. Call the dude up and ask him about the lake you picked. Most times the person will be really helpful with suggestions about lakes, species and stocking that has been done.
about fires .......
I try to follow the rules but do break them sometimes. Fish need to be cooked on an open flame :] The penalties for being caught might be a felony in your state. So i only have "bad" fires when I am well away from the trail. Having said that, Its much more relaxing to just go when you can legally have a fire.
hope this helps a little :]- Yeah man good stuff. I appreciate the info. I may be checking back in to this thread to pick your brain.HijoDMaite

Some bullshit video I made a few years ago. My friend has since moved to Silver City, NM and I'm in NW Michigan now. Kinda sucks because he's like a brother to me, but the good thing is we're making bigger plans and he finally got laid out there.
If you're interested in what it's like to paddle in the southern Everglades, check out this vid.
- I went kayaking on vacation in Florida last year. Finally prompted me to buy my own kayak and get out with my son. Were in So Cal, but at least we are outside.lemmy_k
- What are you paddling, sit on top tandem or did you get into some serious sea kayaks. I understand SoCal paddling requires some planning due to the watercanoe
- I picked up a tandem sit on top used. I stay away from the waves since my son is only 10. We go to back bay or Huntington Harbor. We also go to June Lake.lemmy_k
- Sit on top tandems are the best, so easy... have fun!canoe
- Hey Canoe, where about in NW Michigan, Traverse City?ShenanigansTV

Hijo, for future trips, backpacking or just camping:
Look up Kennedy Meadows Campground as a launching point. South of Lone Pine by about 60 miles.- Current conditions: Closed. Bummer. I am heading that way in Sept.I was hoping for a new stop.lemmy_k
- Thanks capn !HijoDMaite
- lemmy, if you go in september it should be good. warmer weather and freezing cold river to fish in. i backpacked a month ago therecapn_ron
- Cool, thanks cap. We will take a look.lemmy_k

Any QBNers has ever made the Pacific Crest Trail or thinks about doing it? Or any other thru hike experiences?
- Does the Inka Trail count?canoe
- Sure, you made it? How many days? Km/miles?Bennn
- It was a 7 day-er, and yes made it there, and man the day you get there you have to scale a wall without touching the wall, so it's like the steepest stairs evecanoe
- ever, and they are slimy, wet, mossy and it's 5am and scary as hell.canoe
- Other than than, pure blisscanoe
- nice! The Pacific Crest Trail is tempting, its 5 months of walk tho... complicated with work and shitBennn
- It’s on my bucket listHijoDMaite
- I'm available for a week, not 5 months, don't forget your fleshlight, I mean...canoe
- on my bucket list too Hijo, maybe we will cross path there ;)Bennn
- i've done a lot of the eastern sierras/inyo and sequioa sections in separate trips. one day the whole thing. looks like a beast.capn_ron
- Yeah one day when I can afford to take 6 months off work. The YT vids are inspiring. People crying when they reach the end and shit.HijoDMaite
- exactly! And yeah me too, I need to take 6 months off evetything to do this... I should have done it when I was in my 20s ffsBennn

Although I didn't have any luck with the fish, last Saturday I got out to this park by 7am on a beautiful Saturday morning. It was the kind of morning where I just appreciated the silence, the lack of wind, and the serenity.
