there was a few bad storms in our area last year -tornados that put us out of power for over a week - during that time, all our news was coming in via twitter following a local storm hashtag...
they had never really made sense to me before that, but i see the merit in them now - especially seeing them other places, fb and so on.
i consider them sort of like a subject line for conversations when they happen outside of twitter/instagram, i guess. a lead in point for public conversations.
but, there are always people that seem to not really know how to use them appropriately/effectively

I see them migrating away from Twitter and being used as part of everyday internet language. I've been guilty of this myself you can make a statement and just follow it with something like '#sandy' just to let people know what your talking about.
I don't mind them.

They're good for Twitter and Instagram.

i've seen crotchety people get all worked up and angry about people using them outside of twitter but haters are gonna hate
- why would anyone use them outside twitter? that's just stupidmonospaced
- why should anyone care? why do people feel the need to police that shit? it's just internet colloquial nowscarabin
- it's not though, I don't use twitter so it's just a random symbol and spaces missingmonospaced
- that being said, I just ignore it, I don't police the internet and I don't really caremonospaced
- it's still a valid form of expression even if you aren't part of the culturescarabin
- not to people who don't use twitter, thoughmonospaced
- the same could be said about hip hop slang. i don't "speak jive" but i recognize it as a form of communication whether i use it or notscarabin
- or not. but yeah, i don't do it myself or care if others do it, i just don't see the point in resisting cultural shiftsscarabin
