^ Son, I am disappoint. Steve would have told us we were simply "reading them wrong" and "not to read them like that."

Good to see the CEO stepping up and admitting they failed to deliver a replacement for an app that might lacked some new features they wanted but worked pretty well almost everywhere.
Let's see how this improves, and if Google decides on developing their own app in the meantime.

When they started out and originally included Google maps nobody even heard of Android as a concept, Google wasn't positioning themselves as competition then. They had to cut them lose sooner or later and there is no better way to weed out map bugs than customer feedback.

- okay you pay for that "experience" to make it better in a few years.. the rest of us will live in today.monolith

and Google just continues to destroy Apple and makes them look like worthless junk.
Google takes knife out of Apple's wound, sticks it back in, twists.
People are still getting news of Apple's humiliating apology and offer of alternative map apps for iOS in their streams. Then Google goes and announces a quality upgrade for its already-superior Maps product. The company announced today that more high-resolution satellite images and more 45-degree aerial views have been added to dozens of cities on Google Maps.

- Do you even read what you write? You're talking about a maps app. Calm the fuck down.monospaced
- Mono, it's not "just a maps app". It's a glimpse at incompetent leadership and bad decision making...CanHasQBN
- ...more of it, and this company is running downhill.CanHasQBN
- actually it IS JUST a maps app.monospaced

LOL. Mono, even this guy mentions a "decade" (last paragraph)
- a decade is like 2x longer than we've had smart phones. It's laughable to talk about that timeframe with techmonospaced
- They are talking about how long Tim Cook will still be head of the company.chossy
- *facepalm, then CanHasQBN's comment is meaningless.monospaced

From a business standpoint, I don't see how google would be offering a free mapping solution to iOS users without some sort of license fee. Is there any possibility that google basically held apple ransom by upping this hypothetical license fee thinking apple would have to suck it up and pay or go their own route, and apple decided to say "fuck you"?
- Future looking, like for location based advertising?ETM
- oh thats clevertrooperbill
- They are in fact holding for licensing fees.instrmntl

^^ that's exactly what happened. Anyone who thinks that Apple is just stupid is really stupid. Google licensed their maps for iOS and then released Android, with a superior version of Maps. Apple didn't like that the iOS Maps was inferior and the control over that quality depended on it's Biggest competitor. What do you do? You send them a flying cock and release your own version, that you can control. Now, it's pretty obvious that a good mapping solution is no easy task, Google is working on theirs for nearly a decade with lots and lots of user feedback, backed by a browser solution too, which probably has even more use than their mobile one. Apple just started a couple years ago, maybe 3. They have had no user feedback, and they don't have a browser version either (at least public). It's going to take time to get it right, it sucks to have it half baked right now, but they really had to cut the cord.

- maybe apple will buy waze (please!)!jaylarson
- if they cared about their users and not think of them as idiots who gobble everything, they would have paid licensing for another year or two while they built their own that doesn't suck. But no, they decided to take advantage of the fact that Apple consumers are dumb and will eat any shit Apple throws themmonolith

I got the new iphone the other day, it's nice

So are the 3D maps on iPhone 4? Or is it just iPad?
- iPhone 4S & 5, and iPad 2 & new iPad. iPhone 4 gets new maps, but no 3D.Nathan_Adams

So Google now says that they and Apple had a year left in a current agreement for Google Maps, and Apple surprised them with this move. Which is why they are still several months away from the iOS app everyone wants. So Apple could have used that year to work on these maps more, and instead thought, I suppose, thought it was more important to highlight/release with the iPhone 5/iOS6 release, rather than have waited for the next release.
Reading between the lines, it seems Google expected it, just not until the remaining agreement concluded.

^^To wait another year would mean discard a year of usage (which is really important for accuracy), and next year, Apple would be at the same spot it is today, because what they need is people using Maps. Not UI refinements. Why would they wait another year if that meant worse than releasing it now? Release the Kraken already! And a year from now, Maps will be far better than if they had waited.
- ESKEMA0
@monolith
I get that they could have kept paying Google to serve us with what we already had, but that would mean being inferior forever. They chose being inferior for 1/2 years and control their future. Why can't you acknowledge that? Have you ever done business? Better yet, have you ever done business with your biggest competitor? Do you like it when he keeps sticking it up your butt? One more year of butt sticking is fucking hard to remove and gives you a nasty hole.If Google had released Turn-by-Turn navigation, vector tiles and lots of other improvements for iOS like they have on Android and Apple cut the cord to that, implementing their inferior solution, then I'd be outraged.
Google never released those things intentionally crippling iOS. I would have done the same. Apple can't be in a position to depend on others anymore. They have to control as much of the experience as possible or stuff like this will keep happening. Even if that means sacrificing some quality temporarily.

It's Apple vs Flash all over again. geez
Who won last time? Yeah, Flash is now a mobile powerhouse...- You were doing really well until now.chossy
- I just pulled this one up because the arguments are all the same, not in an Apple win you loose.. but yeah sorry.ESKEMA
- where's that damn edit button?ESKEMA
- ha ha, :) I want apple to release a great maps app. I totally do but I want them to consider things a little more.chossy
- @chossy, they DID release a great App, it just needs work and input and refinement.monospaced
- that being said, NO WAY i'm upgrading to iOS 6 until this shit is fixedmonospaced

Just had a play with apple maps again. Last time was when it was just released and it was utterly crap. Couldn't find anything. It even said it couldn't find London.
Looks like they've been hard at work, it's actually really quite good now, at least for the small time I played with it.
Fund everything I searched for, including fairly obscure stores. The satnav style directions are great, too.
Still don't think I'm ready to update the ios and replace google maps just yet, however.
- Mainly out of principle. It looked like a good enough replacement I must admit.set

Got a new iphone a few days ago. The new maps is actually pretty damn good - and really really fast.

Is there a web version of Apple Maps?
- mathinc0
The UX on it is wonky. I used it today for the second time and I searched for a city, Directions to (route), it populated my starting location field with 'Current Location' (like I expected) but then gave me a listing of other locations also titled 'Current Location' (second line had some more detail to differentiate the list), so I clicked one thinking it wanted me to specify my current location in more detail.. no.. it routed me from my current location to the other current location and not the city I searched for. At the very least the app should know that the location I'm going to is the most important part and shouldn't be so quick to assume I'll pick a location near me to replace that.
I know they'll get it right eventually. But this app is a big step back, and not just in terms of the mapping data. You'd at least think they'd get the UX correct even if they didn't have the rest dialed in. Maybe they had to scramble to get this in place for the iOS release.

haven't used it, but apparently http://www.waze.com/ is really good. real-time traffic updates; re-routes you as you're traveling.

Apple has fired the head of the map team:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/techno…- reeks of passing the buck. poor guy was prob told to make magic b/c we're ditching google. make it happen.prophetone
- behind the scenes he was prob all like how are we supposed to catch up and launch so soon bros?prophetone
- they forced the launch against his recommendations and they canned him for it.prophetone
- i'm guessing...prophetone
- Forstall was prob all like i told you guys we were jumpimg the gun, i'm not apologizing for sh*tprophetone
- But Cook was probably all like, 'listen bro, you better say sorry!"ian
- But Forstall was all up in his face, like 'Uh, uh. No way Jose!"ian
- And then Cook was all like, "You better apologies, or I'm changing the locks, bro!"ian
- And Forstall was like, "I dare you, I double dare you"ian
- And then Cook was like, "fine then, be that way" so he apologies, but then he changed the locks anyway.ian
- And he wrote "Forstall is a cock" in the toilets.ian
- Probably.ian
