I'm making the noobiest of noob changes to a static html page. I've got all the source files but within the html, all the paths begin with "/" which I'm assuming makes them absolute.
But, when I preview the changes in a local browser I see no images or styling. Making the paths relative works but I don't really want to make such a wholesale change to the pages, thinking they were created done this way for a reason.
I know I'm an idiot in this regard but can anyone shed any light on why this is happening?
Thanks...

"all the paths begin with "/" which I'm assuming makes them absolute"
yes you are right.
looks like this is imposible to change "on the fly" with an htaccess rule.
what you should to is just toss the whole online website in your root local directory (ex: htdocs) (not good practice at all)
- on xampp a root file is called index.html so watch out!i_was

just d a quick find and replace on all paths and then change back when uploading... easy. 2minute job.

Are you using any sort of WYSIWYG? Most allow you to specify a local root for previewing (i.e. your working folder).

Run a local apache instance and test the site within that

I would just do a find and replace like fadein11 said

Thanks everyone. I've taken your advice and changed all the paths. I was trying to avoid becoming the new 'owner' for obvious reasons, sorted now...
