What's the key to getting newsletters to align right in cross browser testing?
lets say it's a psd design sliced up with added alt tags etc., then saved for web.
html file looks fine, used outlook to send a test to a gmail account. the images come out missed aligned by roughly 25px at most
is it blank placeholders that throw the design off?

depends how its sliced up, what the resulting code is. If its laid out in DIVs or something, and the divs are set to have a margin by default, there's your prob right there. You probably have to learn/tweak some CSS stuff to get it all looking perfect..
Ive also found that using Tables for html-based emails is best, as it seems to be the most consistent rendering across various online email browsers and email apps.

Build it from scratch using tables for layout.

eblasts = css should be used for style only, use tables for layout not divs
