used them on my work machine in dropbox so that if I dropped a .c4d file into the folder it would fire up c4ds command line renderer then start rendering to another folder in dropbox.
Leave work machine on over the weekend then render stuff in the office so my home office doesn't get fucking hot in summer.
Could do the same if I logged in via SSH I guess, but then I'd need to make sure my machine was visible past the work firewalls. So this seemed easier.

This saved me a ton of time changing 1000+ filenames. Our image carousel changed sizes, and our naming convention started with the dimensions, ie: 980_420_image_name.jpg. Batch resizing was fine for the image in PS, but then had wrong prefix in filename. Folder action was the way to go.

The rename finder items action in Automator is a life saver.
It can make files sequential, search and replace parts of the filename, etc
so handy
