The iFix it teardown is illuminating.

bump!
anyone have one? reaaallly need a new machine, dunno whether to hold out for the next update

So are people buying the new Pros?
Did anyone buy a MBP since the new ones are out? Did you choose Retina or the regular screen?

my coworker bought one. She loves it and it is beautiful. But she has to change resolution to work in Photoshop for now. I guess that's a short term problem. She also had a terrible time setting it up on our work network but other than that she seems happy.

Pros:
- blazingly fast with ssd
- smaller and lighter
- great battery life
- excellant speakersCons
- the web and old applications like CS4 look blurry on retina
- thunderbolt replaces mini-dvi and dvi so you need to buy adapters
- the old power adapters don't fit anymore without an adapter
- they reversed the trackpad scrolling so that's annoying (down is up, up is down - wtf)- oh ya, and there is no network cable port so you need a thunderbolt adapter there toospot13
- uh, that trackpad is fully customizable. you can change the scrolling to any direction you want in the Settings.CanHasQBN
- I actually prefer the new scrolling. It really does make more sense.monospaced
- I think it makes sense if you are also using an iPhone or tablet (consistency)ribit
- whatever. it's still a conspot13
- how can it be a con if it's a non-issue?monospaced

I thought long and hard about the retina display, but decided not to go for it.
The issue was mostly the price, as getting a retina display with the specs I wanted was going to cost almost a grand more than getting a non-retina factory refurb model with similar power. So in the end I opted for the factory refurb and some cash in my pocket (cash that I didn't really have to begin with anyway).
But then my refurb MBP arrived and the metal casing was slightly warped and the thing wouldn't sit flat on my desk. So I returned it and now I'm back to the drawing board. Apple was really good about the return process though.
This was my first ever Mac, and I'm not positive if I'm going to order another MBP or one of the sexy new Vizio laptops: http://www.vizio.com/notebook/ov….
The one week I spent with my MBP before I returned it was a very frustrating one coming from the PC world, but I guess that's to be expected if I'm breaking habits that are almost 20 years old.

I tried to use 3 external displays with it and it worked, i used 2 of the mini display ports and the HDMI port.

for me it's a design fail because of the bad environmental performance.
no amount of retina BS can make up for the fact it's landfill fodder.
on the plus side, apple just did a very quick u-turn on pulling out of EPEAT certification
- whereRI0
Oh the battery glued thing is also a big concern
- why?ernexbcn
- Because you are forced to DIY and probably void your warranty, or forced to go into an Apple storekgvs72
- going into an Apple Store for free labor is NOT DIY, stop being so dramaticmonospaced
- read a bit about it asshole.

i_was - That's only if it's DIY. Apple still replaces batteries and faulty hardware. I'm not an asshole.monospaced

"for me it's a design fail because of the bad environmental performance."
What do you suggest then? What do we buy instead? Serious question.
If you heard about the u-turn, you probably read Apple's answer—not only they claim to be most environmentally friendly and energy-efficient out there, they now call to push the standards on environmental requirements. A cheeky move on their side since their hardware is supposedly far ahead of the competition in this regard.
- use you're old one for time beinglowimpakt
- your. fuck.lowimpakt
- The thing with Macs is they retain their value, hence they don't need recycling as soon as other laptops.raf
- They also cost twice as much, so percentage wise, they plummet in value like everything else tech wiseformed
- No they don't. I will recoup 75-80% of what I paid form my MB Air 10 months ago and get a new one soon.raf

do you have one georges?

if you get a retina display your work will look better on your comp than on anyone elses. You'll get used to this and forget that it'll look relatively shit to whoever you send it to. I'd wait till all displays are retina
- hehe truewhereRI
- i work with 2 screens anywaywhereRI
- what happens when retina2 comes out next year for the ipad-macro 5 launch and then everything will be more fucked upspot13
- I think apple is shooting themselves in the foot by not making retina an open standardspot13
- yeh, they'll be the fuckedestcraigatkinson
- GeorgesII0
try to summarize,
No I don't have one,
but after thinking about the pros and cons,
which must be similar to all those pointed before (battery life, soldiered ram/disk, weight, price).
it comes down to stability of the OS and price tag,if I had the money I would probably buy one because my trustee vaio is dying

It's been quite some time since they started releasing laptops with embedded batteries, just like the iPhones. I see no problem with that, batteries are better now than 5 years ago. And if you need to change it just bring the computer to an Apple Store or authorized reseller and they can swap it.
Pretty sure you can also do it yourself but I haven't looked.
