Microsoft doesn't allow anyone to see the specs of the NTFS format.
Now OS X can write to NTFS but it's a hidden option you have to turn on because there is no 100% guarantee the reverse engineered spec is correct. So by default they turn it off so they're not responsible for data loss.
You can use FAT32 but that has a shitty 4 gig file limit
Other option would be installing a HFS+ driver in your windows machine
