    is this acceptable? if not what width would you recommend? I'm designing a design company's website, so they want it nice and big on screen... thanks

    Normally page width is based on common screen sizes, minus a certain amount of space for browser chrome. The vast majority of sites target 1024 screen size and make the site somewhere between 950 and 1000 pixels wide.

    thanks ukit2. what would the next step up be in acceptable size? the client wants the site bigger than standard 1024...

    1280 would probably be the most common next step up. But if you target that size you might want to design the site to have a liquid width or to dynamically resize itself using responsive design so that users on smaller screens don't get a scrollbar.
