I have a friend who graduated from college (RTF) in NYC and she wants to begin a career in project management. She's sharp, a real go-getter and willing to start as an assistant or junior PM.
I know to give advice to someone interested in design BUT I don't know how I help someone who wants to be a project manager so any advice from any of you good people out there would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I was a PM for around 3 years at my current job before being promoted - thankfully - to more of a consultant/strategy position.
A few things that come to mind:
1. Best advice I ever received - if you have to give a client bad news, just get it over with. They're going to find out eventually, so don't waste time avoiding the inevitable.
2. Make sure your Excel and MS Project skills are up to par. Even if the company doesn't have standard tools for managing timelines and budgets, use industry-standard tools with files that clients can easily open.
3. Only own what you are responsible for. If your job is to manage how a project gets done, and the resources used to do that, that is your job. Don't try and design things, don't try and tell tech people how to do their job. Manage the project, not the project's parts. Be responsible for doing YOUR job perfectly.- great advice mg33, but HOW can she get a starting gig, is it just luck and knowing the right people to get in???robotron3k
- Sadly, I think so. I think it's more critical than ever to know someone who can get your foot in the door.mg33
