/\ good advice.. however I always counter the 'ugly baby' argument because it is inaccurate since a person can't do anything about their ugly baby.. instead I compare it to telling someone that their teenage child is using crack..Now, it makes more sense... by 'unplugging the light' you are negligent to your teen's behavior and thus responsible... So while you can get mad at the person for telling you your baby is on crack.. you are essentially focusing your energy in the wrong place and need to address the situation.. simple and plain.. See what I'm sayin?

My car's check engine light has been on for nearly two years.

Sometimes the check engine light goes on if the gas cap wasn't properly locked back on the last time you got gas.... fakes out the car's sensors.
I'm sure there's an agency-is-not-the-Titanic allegory somewhere in this loose gas cap check engine light analogy....

are you in an industry that is in a disastrous slump with the obvious signs everywhere?

if you understand that the blinking light is just low windshield-washer fluid, then maybe you can ignore it for the moment.

start freelancing.....
In some of my previous experience, some companies rarely get the warning signs till it's almost too late, and even then don't quite get into action soon enough....

Bad analogy. My check engine light has been on for 2 years. You're the sucker that paid for towing.

vaxorcist has the right idea.
Make sure your portfolio is current and ready to go at all times.
Owners RARELY admit they're doing something wrong. It's like admitting your baby is ugly. Hired CEOs are sometimes different. So if you think there's a problem that needs fixing but nothing is happening, then just keep collecting the $ while remaining ready to jump ship at the blink of an eye.
