What's an iPhone?

Sorry I missed your question, pressplay, but the rationale for the wood texture was that it supported the retro feel I was attempting to achieve. You raise a really good point though - if it's going to be a list app, it ought to look more list-like. Notepads, paper, etc...

Feels a bit grey and generic looking. The icons look like they came from a free library.
You could give it a specific look, like make it look like a note book (without ripping off field notes), or make it look more minimal with custom fonts and primary colours etc.
At the moment it looks like its designed from default assets.
Good luck with it.

Did you spend more than an hour designing?
1. Cheesy script.
2. Generic icons.
3. Wood for no reason.
4. Boring clunky >'s.
5. BIG edit button.Come on now.
- MondoMorphic0
^^ hahahaha - a lot more than an hour for most of it.
Don't just criticize though. Since you're the expert of things that take more than an hour to design, what would you have done?
- freshdude0
I'd improve and refine all those things.
I'd actually design it.
- freshdude0
1. NO Cheesy script.
2. CUSTOM icons THAT DON'T LOOK LIKE 2001 CLIP ART.
3. NO WOOD.
4. SLIMMER >'S.
5. SMALLER edit button.TO START.

My question wasn't what you *wouldn't* do. It was what you *would* do. What less-cheesy logo would you have designed? Which non 2001 clip art icons would you have created? What non-wood texture would you have used?
- I'm not going to do it for you.freshdude
- Just work on it more and look at some good design for inspiration.freshdude
- Of course not, but surely you could have offered something constructive as well.MondoMorphic

I think he is being sarcastic.
- MondoMorphic0
Could be, but if he's going to take the time to be sarcastic, then he may as well take the time to be constructive.

although freshdude lacks tact... he has a point. Alot of the elements have a very generic feel. If you want to stand out... especially in a field as crowded as a List application for iphone it might be worth your while to try and break graphical conventions.

"Mondo Builds Breathtaking User Experiences" haha.

Good luck.

Good points. I did genuinely spend a lot of time on the app (this wasn't its first iteration), but I also did want to try to use as many common elements (the large >s, etc) as possible in an attempt to create a usable interface. There's obviously great value in standing out though, so I appreciate the sage wisdom.

you havn‘t answered my question.

i like it.
have you considered any sort of list hierarchy? i.e.: my list of "things to get to file for taxes" might be more important than my list of "things to do in paris."
perhaps assigning an urgency to them? that might be too clunky.
i'm using paperless currently, which seems to have a lot of the same functionality (with a large icon library) - and that's one of the things that bugs me...
but overall, it looks like it holds it's weight. not sure why the wood texture is an issue... i think it looks fine.

I think the customization isa pretty key component to making most things just a tad better, giving the user more control of what they want to see not just what you want to see. In most cases we want to control everything, but give them different skins, not just wood, maybe as one above suggested different icons for different types of lists, or maybe the ability to color silhouette icons whatever they would like.
I like bjadams hierarchy idea.

Why is it made of wood?
Design choices should have some reason behind them.
- I think he is not willing to answer that, maybe he carves his notes in woodpressplay
