I go through this every time. I have a 3D camera. All the layers in my comp are 3D. Cast shadows is set to On in my light's properties. What am I missing?

you have to tell the solid under properties to be accept the lights

Ok, I forgot about that, but now that I switched the layers to accept lights. I still get nothing. All the layers are still set to cast shadows by default.

I just noticed that even though my light is in a normal position in front of everything, it does absolutely nothing in my comp. I tested the intensity at 2500% and it does nothing, even if I change it to point, ambient, spot or parallel. I'll try creating a new light, then maybe restart AE, curse a few times and then try a non-3D transition and call it a day.

Set layers to not only to accept lights, but to cast shadows!
You have to do it on both, the layer that is casting a shadow, and the layer that it's receiving the shadow.

By default, after effects has both of these off, I was there at one time, I was like what the hell, no shadows??

Thanks. I had given up on it since I needed to get work done. When I rendered everything worked as is was supposed to. Isn't there anyway to see the shadows without rendering the movie?

    oh yeah!
under the preview window, next to the 'bouncing ball thingy' that shows motion blur, there might be something there...
