Tonight I will be shooting a 40th birthday party. The location is going to be a big backyard, they will be using rented lights that will hang sort of like this:
I will be using my Canon 5d Mark II
24-105mm f/4.0 L
and my Nifty 50 1.8
Plus a Canon 430ex FlashI just picked up a 430ex flash on Craigslist so I am new to the flash world. I figured I will keep my flash on ETTL and play with my exposure and ISO on the camera until I find that sweet spot between flash light and ambient light.
I also picked up a diffuser for the flash since there are no walls to bounce the light from outside.
Do you guys have any other suggestions or ideas?
Thanks!

Ditch the flash and use your 50mm on its own. They are ace in low light. I use it a lot for live bands without flash.
Keep the ISO around 800 and aperture at about 2, you should get some great results .
- 800... won't that be really noisy?monospaced
- Not with my 5D Mark II it laughs in the face of ISO 800HijoDMaite

- I totally agree... you could easily go to 1600 and it would be alrightsadpanda

I think you are right, I will try to use my 50mm most of the night since my new 5d seems to perform so well in high ISO settings.
I want to practice with my flash too though I'm only charging $150 for 3 hours so I am going to experiment.

Use the flash -2 and longer exposures.

run your flash from a cable so you can light from another angle. like this.. http://www.smartshanghai.com/gal…

Or launch a large military flare into the sky (yellow). This will give you enough ambient light and make the party feel special.

So it didn't go too bad last night but it was a bit nerve wrecking that I had to experiment. It's hard to get used to the idea that using a flash allows you to shoot at speeds lower than 1/60
The whole night was a fight to get sharp images while allowing ambient light to show up so people don't look like they're photoshopped in to the image.
here are some samples:

24-105mm f/4.0 L
that will be mostly useless
