Was thinking about staying in Marseille for a few days on a trip in January but i keep reading that its all fucked up and people get robbed there a lot. Hype? Is there any reason to check the city out or are there surrounding places that are better to stay in?

"I moved to Marseille 8 months ago and it is now officially the worst place in the world, in my opinion. Within those 8 months, I have been shouted at more or less everytime I left my apartment. 3 months ago, my apartment got broken into, and everything valuable was stolen. Apparently, sunday afternoons is their favourite time because the majority of people go to the beach at this time. Myself and 2 female friends were walking home from a night out, and got followed home by a group of teenage boys, 1 of whom ran into us and tried to steal my bag. Luckily, we were holding on tightly so they ran off with nothing. And last night, to top all of this off, as I was at my friends front door, with the key almost in the lock, we turned around to see a guy pointing a gun at us, shouting at us in french. We didn't understand what he wanted, so he took the safety off the gun, which is when I gave him my bag, with my passport, purse, phone, iPod, keys... everything inside. He ran off. We called the police, asking to speak with an English speaking officer, but when I told him what had happened, he replied, with, 'Yeah...?' as if it was nothing and then hung up on me.
I strongly recommend that you don't travel to Marseille unless absolutely necessary. Women should definitely NEVER walk alone, and even in the daytime, be on your guard. If these people see any opportunity, they will take it. I'm leaving as soon as possible and I will never ever return".- ihatemarseille.

That website is bullshit. I'm French and I can tell you, just like any other big city in the world Marseille has its problems and its dodgy areas, but that website is a total dramatisation of the truth.
Unfortunately people tend to go on websites to talk about their experiences only when they're bad.

^ That's true. You wouldn't catch me out at night in Walthamstow, but that doesn't mean I think ALL of London is like this.

I was just looking at going there as well.... but picked Budapest instead :P

- I almost got kidnapped in Budapest! But it's a great place to party =)zarkonite

People like to complain and dramatise, especially on the web where there is little to no accountability. Think for yourself and take reviews with a pinch of salt, they could be written by an ignorant redneck for all you know, and you could miss out on some great stuff.

yeah, thats kinda what i thought. hype. I'm sure if i went looking for trip reports for my hometown Oakland, i'd find some terrible stories.
Any advice on cool stuff to check out while I'm there?

Are you a Segway adventurer? In my humble opinion, Segway of Oakland is not a good choice. I've done Segway tours in other cities, never saw anything like this. The tour leader had some very bad habits. One was to move out fast way ahead of the group and then play around on his own and wait for us to catch up. When stopped at an intersection he would rock backward about a foot before starting forward, almost hit a woman who was standing behind him. She really had to move fast to get out of his way. The tour circuit had broken glass, railroad tracks, splintered wooden piers, and very busy city streets. I'd say find another city for your adventure.

just don't walk in dark places at night, especially at liquor stores!
if you are a sureno FUNKTOWN should be safe for you or anything below 20th avenue
if you are a norteno 23-60's should be safe for you
if you are a blood 70's should be safe for you
if you are a border brother 80-100's should be safe for you.
if you are a drunk Paisa no place is safe for you, if is not gangbangers it's the 5'0 and Immigration
if you are white just stick to the hills, Jack London Square, and downtown, and nothing will happen to you
if you are arabian stick to the liquor store's, most are arabian
if you are asian, Funktown is your town & of course CHINATOWN
if you are mexican(or other latino's) LA CATORCE, or E' 14, especially Fruitvale
if you are black, WEST OAKLAND or the 70's
if you are a LATIN KING just dont come cuz there are no latin kings and you will get shot.
and if you are a tourist dont go to 94th ave, because there's shootings everyday and you might step in the war zone
