I just had to get a new lens so I picked this up for $200:
Canon EF-s 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS.
It's my first telephoto and my third lens after my kit 18-55mm and my 50mm 1.8.
I have yet to learn how to shoot with a telephoto so I assume I will be using my tripod a lot right?
Anyway this week we are getting 10ft surf in San Diego so I was thinking about setting up on the pier. I should be able to get some good shots with this.

- Interesting. Price is similar but no Image stabilization right? means you pretty much have to use tripodHijoDMaite

IS is well worth the price. Makes shooting hand held at 300 doable.

yea i agree I will always get 'IS'
I will be taking some surfing shots this week at morning and mid day. I wanted to get some shots at a local high school football game tonight but I'm thinking the light situation may be to low for my f/4-5.6.
I am hoping my tri pod will come in handy then.

Over processing aside, IS is not a necessity, nor is a tripod
