I let my 14 year old niece borrow my Leica DLUX-5 for a week (she has gotten into photography). She loved it so much I'd like to get her a camera that has some of the features (has pre-set scenarios and settings - like pinhole) but is way cheaper.
Any recommendations that fit the bill?

Ditto. The Panasonic LX5 is the exact same camera. Without the name and being 500 cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-…

I've been reading this after deciding to get us a new point and shoot before we go to Iceland instead of a new 70-300mm lens for my D90. My fiancé needs a new camera, and debating between the Nikon and Panasonic in this review. I have a Lumix from 2006, but only 4MP and we are ready for an upgrade.

thanks...I'll look at the Panasonic LX5. Before I got my camera I researched it pretty extensively and there were some key differences between the Leica and Panasonic in reviews I read...which is why I sprung for the extra bucks. I love that camera. I'd still rather pay less than $400. I tried to give her my Nikon D60 (a fine camera) but she turned her nose up at it because it's too big. Kids today.

G12 is too much though looks nice. I think I might go with the Canon Digital Elph 300. It's super compact and takes decent shots. Thanks. :)

I heard decent things about the Canon S95. Thoughts?

changed my mind...going with Sony Cyber-shot HX9.

to me the Canon Ixus has always defined the line between pricey and amazing results/ease of use. The colours and lens quality are just incredible, as is the way it handles flash. If too pricey, go for an older model, not the latest and greatest Vivitar

Here's the HX5 (I got the last version, not the new HX9). Now I want one...has touch screen, built in HDR, sweep panoramic, etc.

Hate to say it, but I can understand why she wouldn't want your D60. Besides her possibly not understanding how useful it can be...It's just not always comfortable to carry around those types of cameras. Especially when you have smaller hands.
I really like the Canon S90 and S95, but it may be more expensive than you want. Perhaps try a refurbished or second-hand one. It's in-between a point-and-shoot and DSLR in terms of features.
