Have you hunted before, and if not, would you? I've thought about it, but dont really know anything about hunting beyond the palaver for or against animal slaughter and horror stories of people shooting things they shouldn't.

Its all good man, just go with people that know what they are doing.
Most of the time your just sitting around, doing nothing.
If you actually shot something, like a deer, you have to carry it out of the bush and then gut it.. which is really messy and intense for anyone that's not from a rural area.

i don't really care for guns. when i'm in the bush, it's just me and my knife. When i see deer creeping up, i confront it face to face, blocking all its powerful hoof punches and even throwing some elbows to its grill before I stab it in the face. Its more humane, rather than shooting the animal in the back, or when its not looking. When the job is done, bless it, before gutting its meat for the family.

- I like the idea of hand to hand combat with a deer. I'd pay to see someone try that.aldebaran
- Haha, I know a man that waited in a tree to kill a deer with a bowie knife. He got the shit beaten out of him by the deer. And lost the bet.zackline
- It's really hard to survive a deer attack...ItalianStallion

i've snared a rabbit and shot a deer with a bow, but i was young and didn't know any better

I'm in the woods/bush all the time, but just as a hiker. It's only a matter of time before something decides to hunt me...

I went on a deer hunt many years ago, but didn't see a single buck. Never went hunting again, although I have nothing against it per se. If a hunter is (1) an accomplished marksman who can kill quickly and efficiently, (2) plans to make full use of the meat and pelt rather than merely hanging a head on his wall, and (3) is hunting sober and legally, then it's great. It's certainly more humane than the way many animals are slaughtered. A high-powered bullet to the spine, heart, or head works much faster than a knife to the jugular, for instance.

i dont hunt, (not since i was a kid, and only shot rabbits) but i find hunting more humane and sanitary than raising an animal in captivity in horrid unsanitary conditions feeding it food its not meant to eat + pumping it with hormones just so it will grow faster for profit then having it slaughtered at a slaughter house, then feeding our kids shit meat pumped up with hormones and asking myself, why is my kid obese, sick and dumb.

I used to go quite regularly when I was younger. It was sort of a right-of-passage in my family. But as I've gotten older and time has begun to slip i've gone less and less. I think i've gone twice in the last five years and made one shot at a Doe of those two times. Hunting is certainly a patient person's past-time. It can be quite thrilling to shoot something and nothing quite beats fresh meat that you yourself bagged. But it is quite a feat to pull your game from the bush, gut it and dress it and process it. Very time consuming and takes a lot of energy too.
All in all, it is something I wish I did more often. Maybe after things settle down...

Do it for food, gut and butcher and eat it yourself, feel remorse and gratitude for the thing that died, think hard about it, enjoy the meat.
If there's any sport to it, and you find yourself enjoying besting an animal with your massive brain, opposable thumbs and 10000 years of human engineering behind you then stop.

horrid stories?
Sounds like someone is generalizing and repeating what they have been told to believe.

If you're going to eat it and be respectful of the animal and the forest I don't see why it's a bad thing.
If you're shooting for sport/thrill I find that disturbing...like an elephant or something - u cant eat that shit as far as I know.

I think any hunter would be dishonest if they said they didn't enjoy hunting for the challenge and the sport. I don't see why that's bad as long as one is hunting responsibly. That applies to sustenance hunters in third world countries as well. Man was born to hunt. It's just that for most guys these days, hunting takes on other forms. I know for myself, when I have a solid idea and start working full-speed ahead and lose track of time, it's a lot like being hot on the trail of a hunter's quarry.

I used to fish with my family as a kid. I didn't have any problem with it until I had to kill a catfish...that was the end for me. meh.

I grew up in a rural mountain town in North Carolina, and everyone I knew hunted regularly, I've never gotten into it myself, the most I've shot is a few rabbits that my dogs dragged up to put them out of their misery. I've helped a few friends gut/skin a deer to learn more about it, something I think any survivalist should aim to do. If you eat what you shoot I don't see a problem with it, but shooting for pure recreation is a little messed up. And though humans have definitely entrenched upon the territory of animals, over population can have drastic effects on both the food chain and vehicular accidents. I know Durham, NC has had several deaths due to deer being on city streets.

I've killed just about everything that walked or crawled at one time or another. And now I am here to kill you Little Bill.
I grew up in the country. We used to go shooting every Sunday. great exercise I must say, we used to walk upto 20 or 30 miles. We would also take a 22 and go to the local land fill and shoot rats at night if we were bored. My brother had a crossbow. That was back when you could just buy stuff from the back of a magazine, from another country and it would arrive no questions asked.

Start simple, go fishing, catch a few, and clean them. Another option, raise chickens if you are in an area that allows it, you get eggs and when they stop laying butcher them. Work your way up to the big stuff. for game hunting try squirrel or rabbit, you won't need anything more than an inexpensive .22 caliber rifle, plus ammunition is cheap. No license is required to hunt the smaller game, go in stages. Happy hunting, and maybe send me some squirrel jerky after you gain proficiency! =D
