Is it a bad idea to have too many links on the homepage? I mean links to deep content elsewhere on the site.
- it's not a yes or no question. You want your site to be crawled so the easier it is to find links to your important content...spot13
- ...the better. But, you need to be clear on what content you are trying to optimize for and build in emphasis or your doing nothing,spot13
- The more specific your site is to a specific topic, the more relevant to the phrase / keyword search engines will rank youspot13

@ukit a year ago i'd have said yes, but i think its more important that you link deep nowerdays so go for it, just make sure your sitewides are sorted (see prev post)

There's still a such thing as SEO? Didn't that die when social networks became popular like Facebook? I thought the new term was GEO.(Google engine optimizer)

Is it a good idea to have "friendly url alias path" ?
example: tools/hammer200
Or is there no need?
- absolutely, the url communicates keywords just like page titles and headings.spot13
- trooperbill0
@attentionspan best practice is yes for usability and bookmarking... however google has been happy to index querystrings for a few years now... if you're using querystrings keep the variables to a max of 3
for url rewriting dont make the virtual directory depth too deep, max of 2 i.e. foo.com/moo/bar/zoo.htm
hth
- Dude, the more you write, the more retarded you sound. That is complete bull shit.spot13
- enjou your ignorancetrooperbill
- attentionspan0
Thanks
but not completely clear on this
"if you're using querystrings keep the variables to a max of 3"
Example? Also .html of urls at the end or no extension at all?
- Trooperbill, can I ask where this 3 variable suggestion came from?spot13
- trooperbill0
@attentionspan i mean
foo.com/index.php?id=1&pid=2&gid...
/?id=1&pid=2&gid=3
is just a canonical url of the above (same would be for a folder)- This would be terrible for SEO as it communicates nothing about the content of the page. Are you seriously selling this bs?spot13
- its the diff between best practice and reality... many querystring urls rank just finetrooperbill

So in regards to page speed NOT being a factor in SEO, then that means Media Temple is either lying, ignorant, or believes otherwise.
Because check out their splash page for their CDN service:

"Improve Your Search Rankings
Did you know search engines now reward fast-loading sites with better rankings? Increase traffic, rank and visibility with little effort."I thought that was just too good to be true.

thanks for all these insightful SEO tips trooperbill. So, with a whopping 300 visits a day to your site, are you going to write a book about your amazing SEO success?
- plash0
got any good primers for seo? for absolute beginners ?
- trooperbill0
@nocomply its a lie based on missinformation
- Link?
I understand it to be otherwisedetritus - stemming from what people expected the update last may to be before the reality kicked introoperbill
- i could show a link but then u could find a counter link... thois is all based on experience and testing not myth and hearsaytrooperbill
- Link?
- trooperbill0
@spot13 im proud of the 300 hits... i know its a drop in the ocean but its taken a while to get there and ive earned every visit.
- I bet, and I'm sure your "annual thread" on QBN doesn't hurt either.spot13
- trooperbill0
@plash got one coming... planning a free ebook thingie
- trooperbill0
@spot13... even if the content is crap you can still rank a site! content is NOT king when it comes to SEO thats another myth.
- that's what SEO people will tell you, and it's true, but unless you spam and pay, it doesn't work and it will be very short term.spot13
- scarabin0
very cool of you to do this trooperbill
- mikotondria30
Content is demonstrably not always king - just think of the number of garbage sites you end up on when you're searching for something that you normally don't (and don't know where to look - just at the mercy of google...).
- OSFA0
Thanks for the info trooperbill!

Content may not (always) be king but links definitely are.

Do you guys have a sample website that follow the guidelines above, say for a photographer or graphic designer? A website with a portfolio in other words.
