The basis of Game of Thrones in GRRM's bio on Wikipedia. He's a Jersey guy who grew up in Newark.
"When his family moved to a larger apartment after his sister was born, he also had a view of the waters of the Kill van Kull, where freighters and oil tankers flying flags from distant countries were coming and leaving Port Newark. He had an encyclopedia with a list of flags, and when using it to figure out where the ships came from, he would find himself dreaming of traveling to these remote locations. After the sun went down, the lights from Staten Island would shine across the water, which in his imagination was Shangri-La and, Timbuctoo and Kalamazoo, and all the other places that I’d never been and could never hope to go".
The young Martin began writing and selling monster stories for pennies to other neighborhood children, dramatic readings included. He also wrote stories about a mythical kingdom populated by his pet turtles; the turtles died frequently in their toy castle, so he finally decided they were killing each other off in "sinister plots"."

HBO made its annual visit to the San Diego Comic Con today where they announced the nine new cast members set to join the show in the upcoming fifth season. The Dornish play a bit part in next season with seven of the new nine characters tied to the Martell family in some way.
The highest profile casting is that of film actor Jonathan Pryce who'll play High Sparrow, the High Septon of the Faith of the Seven (essentially this world's equivalent of the Pope). Also of note is "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Da Vinci's Demons" star Alexander Siddig who'll play Doran Martell, Oberyn's older brother.
Rising young actor/musician Toby Sebastian ("After the Dark") will play his son Trystane, while DeObia Oparei ("Dredd") has been cast as Areo Hotah who serves as the captain of Doran's guards. 15-year-old Nell Tiger Free ("Broken") is also onboard as Myrcella Baratheon, Cersei's daughter who has been living in Dorne since she was shipped off in the third season.
Jessica Henwick ("Silk"), Rosabell Laurenti Sellers ("The Family") and Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider") are set to play Nymeria, Tyene and Obara respectively - Oberyn's bastard children known as the 'Sand Snakes'. Finally, one role outside of Dorne is that of Yezzan, a Yunkai trader whom Enzo Cilenti ("Prisoner's Wives") is set to play.- Good, I think just thinking this show had too few characters....youngdesigner

""Your prayers have been answered, "Game of Thrones" fans.
After a lot of controversy, Cersei Lannister's big "GoT" scene is going to happen after all, thanks to a compromise with Croatian film commissioners.
Initially, the film commission, which TMZ reports is heavily influenced by the local church, wouldn't create permits for a pivotal scene in which Cersei is stripped and shamed by the High Septon because it would require actress Lena Headey to get naked in an actual church in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The scene was too important to be cut, so the two sides have now reached a compromise.
HBO will be allowed to film Cersei walking naked in the streets as long as she doesn't set foot in the place of worship. In addition, all nude scenes inside the church will now be shot on a fake set instead.
It's a solution that should please the old gods and the new (and Jaime of course).""

Considering Bran and Hodor's storyline in HBO's "Game of Thrones" has almost caught up with the published books so far by the end of the fourth season, many were left wondering what is in store for the characters next year.
Turns out not much it would seem. Actor Kristian Nairn, who plays Hodor on the show, tells ABC Australia that he and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark) have time off this year:
"We have a season off and we have a year's hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books. So, I get my year off now to do Rave of Thrones and gallivant all over the world."
Considering Nairn is currently in Sydney, Australia DJ-ing while the fifth season of the series is shooting around Europe, this would seem to confirm his statement though whether it's actually a case of total absence or reduced capacity - we'll see.

Hey Beaners, listen up. The Telltale Game of Thrones game is out. Pro tip: don't buy it. Go to Youtube and find a LP. It's not really a game, as much as it is a good story. And the story is very well done. The characters are interesting and fit within the world of the TV show. So, if you're fiending for more story, this is a great way to fill the void till the show comes back. The graphics are a bit wonky, but the voice work is fucking pro, and all the cameos from show actors are authentic.
