Ive got a free day here in New York today and was wondering if Coney Island is still worth checking out?
Is there anything going on there these days? or is it a dead zone?
If anyone knows, let me know! Cheers!

it's my understanding that the lure of Coney Island is all about Summer fun. i don't have any idea what's running this early in the season.

the freak show is great.
Donnie Vomit is such a good host.

- from what i'm aware, the Shoot The Freak game has been taken down this year or last year.mcmillions
- I went last summer and it was still going strong. Fucking disgraceful.orrinward

don't go out there now unless you want to be depressed
although the aquarium is out there.
- Is everything closed? I figure it may be an interesting place to take some photos even if the place is depressing.desmo
- yeah everything's boarded up, might be good for pictures though yeahdoesnotexist

I went down there in October and it was a ghost town... though "shoot the freak" was running strong.
About a block away is a carnival ride junk-yard. We caught a glimpse of two HUGE guard dogs (rottweilers) standing on top of old purple dinosaurs growling and barking at us. That was our highlight of Coney Island.

Went there 2 years ago for July 4 and it was ridiculous! The hot dog eating contest was so much fun to watch in person. I think if you go out of season, you won't get the same feel as the authentic Coney Island experience. I dont think they shut down any of the rides down since they are not renovating Coney Island any more.

You can take some great depressing style photos there.

also, the old wooden rollercoaster there is scary and dangerous...

Bring a book for the long ass subway ride...and good for pics probably yes, but for the true up and running experience? no.

Go to Brighton Beach instead which is the Russian neighborhood two stops before Coney Island, much more interesting in my opinion.

Coney Island is definitely more hopping in the summer. But it can be kind of spooky fun in the off season. A couple friends and I usually go about once every winter...just about everything but Nathan's is shut down, the HUGE rottweilers are terrifying, and the beach is empty.
Depends what you are looking for. It can be a creepy/zen day. Lots of photo ops.
Personally, I think its always nice to visit the ocean occasionally, even if it is dirty, dirty Coney Island.- dress warm, bring your camera, bring a book for the trainbananana

be on the lookout if you take the subway ride there... some real badass street gangs will try to stop you at any cost.

I think it is a magical place, crowded or not.
I went last April and I loved the emptyness and all the destroyed stuff there.

I cycled there from Williamsburg last year and got mad sunburnt. Also forgot to take a lock so had to wheel my really shit heavy bike everywhere. If the weather's not shite on the weekend i might go down there again, never seen it it a bleak desolate state.
