I'm pretty anti-American when it comes to the USA's military aggression, especially during the last few wars, but for some reason I'd love to see a squadron of jets fly over the demoralized Rebel's heads and bomb the hell out of Kadaffi's troops.

And i picture the rebels raizing their Kalishnikovs in the air shouting wolverines!

If they're going to do it, they need do it soon. I do think other countries need to help with the costs, though. We're already funding two un-winnable in the middle east...it's unsettling to think of adding North Africa to the ledger.

The US isn't in the Nation Building business... anymore.
- What's odd is that France and Britain are clamoring the most for a military response. For once the US is waiting.WrappedInBooks
- Germany is the real party pooper. :-Dkingsteven
- The USA is pulling the strings, they can't be seen as an overt aggressor after Iraq.lukus_W2

Why on earth would the US want to spend the capital to intervene in Libya when we're so financially distressed right now? It's obviously not the slaughter of innocent people because we've been letting Darfur go to hell for years.....
.... oh wait, what is Libya's whole economy based on? Our alterior motives are so painfully obvious that it's insulting to suggest our foreign policy even considers human life.

imagine for a second,
if the US is crazy enough to follow the megalomaniac sarkozi (btw france doesn't really have an army anymore) and attacks Lybia.
Ghaddafi as a last resorts decides to blows up the oil refineries (it worked for deserts storm)
price of gas rises in the US to $10 a gallon in a week,
Ends of US
starts of something new
- I promise you there are already many plans in place to secure and take over the oil.harlequino
- yeah, they were for Irak too I guess ehehe
GeorgesII - most of that oil is for Europe. It would spike prices a bit but Saudi Arabia can just turn on the taps.MrNibs
- yeah mrnibs,
oil is infinite, saudi arabia can take care of the entire world's demand, lalalalalalaaa
GeorgesII - much of US oil comes from US anyway, Texas, Alaska, Gulf +phatwrx
- wasn't implying that it's infinite. But Saudia Arabia merely saying they can compensate will calm barrel prices. Even tho SA likely has 40% less reserves than what they claim.MrNibs
- ... has 40% less reserves than what they say.MrNibs

I fully agree that the US should not get involved. We're not everyone's babysitter. But people can't have it both ways: the right-wing fools in this country who criticize Obama for working on his March Madness picks and cite humanitarian/civil war crisis in Libya and the tragedy in Japan as things he is not focusing on would all be criticizing him if he was spending all his time on Libya as proof he doesn't care about domestic issues. They're all idiots; fuck em.'
- If you don't get involved, you won't get your portion of the oil.lukus_W2

The Guardian is reporting that NATO will indeed declare a no fly zone and send in forces.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/…
Strangely this isn't being mentioned by any US news sites yet.

OK, so LIbya has nearly crushed the rebellion, but NOW they're going to do airstrikes against the government to ensure that the rebelion wins? Shouldn't they be helping the government with airstrikes AGAINST the rebellion to preserve the integrity of the sovereign government?
I'm all cross-eyed here.
- Yeah, but what if said "sovereign government" doesn't have the best interest's of it's people in mind?Andrew_D
- What!?kingsteven
- Gadafi took power in the 60's after overthrowing the government. He was never elected to power.kingsteven
- and responsible for acts of international terrorism throughout the 70's and 80'skingsteven
- These rebels want democracy... not to take power.kingsteven
- yeah king please keep drinking the koolaid, hows the situation now in Egypt, where's all that democracy and freedomGeorgesII
- hah, mg33 seems to be confused at why the west is not supporting gaddafi... just giving some perspective.kingsteven
- i mean this is state-sponsored terrorism - not IRA, UDA, ETA, Al Qaeda...kingsteven
- GeorgesII0
Andrew_D are you joking when you say
""sovereign government" doesn't have the best interest's of it's people in mind?""I didn't see the US or NATO go after China or Burmah or Saudi Arabia, etc
any sane person will know why there's a rush to go save some rebel whom in 20 years time will be labelled terrorists

Probably stating the obvious but I don't think the US will be leading the overthrow of Ghaddafi mainly because it doesn't want to alienate Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Jordan, which have been dealing with their own cries for revolution. I think there's some deals being made that would allow for NATO to interveen, but we will have to support the squashing of protests towards our major Arab allies in the region.
Ghaddafi is sitting on the lightest, sweetest oil available. The global economy will not allow him to stay in power much longer.

"It's over. We are coming tonight," he said. "You will come out from inside. Prepare yourselves from tonight. We will find you in your closets."
"We are coming tonight... we will have no mercy and no pity with them."

The U.N. Security Council on Thursday imposed a no-fly zone extending over all of Libya to try to halt Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's mounting attacks against rebel positions.
The resolution states that "all necessary means" can be used to enforce the no-fly zone. Flights to provide humanitarian aid, medicine or for evacuations are exempt.
The vote was 10 for, none against and five abstentions.
