Is the flag really the only representative of Japan people can think of?

Why would anyone want to hang something on their wall that was a reminder of death and tragedy? That's why I do'nt agree with a lot of these. Although some look great, I'd feel embarrassed and shameful to display it as a donation trophy.

    • spot on calling it a "donation trophy."randommail

one side of me likes these, and is a good way for a 'designer' to express themselves - why not right?

on the other hand, they are tacky, disrespectful and represent some smarty pants on the other side of the globe with a copy of adobe suite.

And all because Japan has a nice minimal flag that appeals to us graphic designers.

I said if before and I'll say it again...
most of these guys are desperate graphic artists who are over-eager to jump at the obvious visual punchline.

    • I get it none of the artwork is any good, but striking out against artists 'who are trying to help' is a silly waste of time.Iggyboo

I find it utterly disrespectful. Degrading a great country, with prints and images of a horrific event. It is not so much the art, but rather the symbolism behind the image. "Japan got fucked, here is a cool image". Did we see 9-11 donation shirts of the towers falling? "Hey America got fucked, wear this around to show your sympathy" Why not show the beauty of the Japanese culture, ie their strength, honor and resilience? ffs. I remember on 9-11 people hanging the American flag off bridges, every bridge and overpass, it was every where. It was the American spirit. It was beautiful. There are a lot of beautiful things going on with Japan yet we have failed to capture that in the graphic community. Instead we have turned the beauty of helping and compassion into a "cool" Japan got fucked image contest.

    /end rant

As is usually the case with Advertising, 'He who pays the piper, calls the tune'. Only time will tell which images will persuade, cajole or even pressgang the public into making a response. As to 'inappropriate' or 'distasteful' uses of the Japanese (or any other) flag; aren't there rules about this sort of thing? If the rules are being broken, I am sure people are doing so with the best intentions. They want to keep Japan in the hearts and minds of the public. In my small way, this is what I am doing on my blog.

    • Rules usually only apply to the physical flag, not images of it or design elements.i_monk
