So, I got my tonsils and adenoids surgery a week ago... and I am still in fuckin' pain! It is painful to swallow water, my tongue is pretty much fucked up, had to stop pain killers to come back to work and I think I'm having withdrawals...

Anyone else here got them done? How long were you in pain/recovery? Any suggestions?

I had my tonsils out when I was a lot younger... they knocked me out too early and I woke up during the procedure. Nightmare. Over it now though and yes, I just ate ice cream for a month afterwards.

    • whaaat! that's crazy!OSFA
    • Yes, if it had happened nowadays, then they'd have been suedRW

I had mine removed when i was like 6 years old because I was a sickly type kid. After that I pretty much stopped getting sick altogether.

I do remember being int he hospital for a day and then getting to come home.

The first few days were pretty bad - vomiting up blood and not really being able to eat/drink much of anything.

After that it wasn't so bad... i remember it was about 5 days before i could take on foods other than soup broth.

Just curious, why did you have them removed? Most recent medical science has shown that there is no 'true' medical benefit to having them removed. Also, i believe it was rather fairly common practice to do it in young children... not so much adults.

    • my friend had them out because she had chronic strep throat. After that she hasn't been sick with it since.shellie
    • She was in her 30s.shellie
    • Yeah, i'm just recapping what a doctor told me.. although I do say I rarely get sick these days.d_rek
    • I went to a new family practitioner and he was like "oh, tonsels removed? This is always interesting."d_rek
    • Told me the popular opinion on the procedure these days - that it's far less common than it used to be, is all.d_rek
    • i believe you. :P im sure in some cases it can still be useful but not just removing on a whim.shellie

i haven't had my done but I know a bunch of people who have. It seems pretty uncomfortable at first. But, they also got sick way less after getting them out. Seems like a win even though it sucks. But you should call your doctor if you think the pain is unusually bad. There are a lot of nerves in there that can make your whole head feel like it's going to explode.

I personally have had a ton of major surgery on my palette and mouth after a bad accident. That shit was really horrible. Over several surgeries I also had to try different pain meds, cos some fucked me up more over others. Vicodin tore up my stomach. Tylenol w/ Codine was the best but they don't have that anymore in the states. Oxy's made me feel like I was dead to the world. I usually opted for no pain meds even if I filled the prescription. It's much more painful at first but I think the overall back to normal feeling comes back much faster. It's hard to (really) work on any of them.

Any way you can stay home from work another half a week or work from home so you can take periodic naps?

    • I did and NOW they tell me it is a pretty nasty double surgery on adults and it might even take 3 weeks to be normal again...OSFA

Well, I was advised by my Dr to get them out because of previous infections and because they were doing more bad than good. I was also advised that this surgery is 10X worse on adults than kids but I didn't expect it to be this bad. I was told it would be 5-7 days of discomfort... my ass! It's been 10 days and I still talk with difficulty, still not able to eat solids or ice cream (the cold/pain combo just makes me want to shove a bat down my throat and in pain.

I hear you Shellie, but the pain was just too bad to handle without meds so I started 'functioning' only with them in my system and now I am paying for it... and unfortunately the other person that could cover for me in case I feel bad and want to go home is on vacation for a week...

    • Chalk it up to power-dieting. You'll be able to fit into all of those old man-kinis you haven't worn in years.d_rek
    • hahaha I have lost at least 10lbs... but with the lack of sleep and pain... look like shitOSFA

it comes in a package. Just cut the bottom bit off where it's dirty looking and wash before putting it in the soup in a salad strainer.

Add some fresh cilantro, and add some pepper to taste. Once the broth is ready just add all this stuff, cook for 2 more minutes and stir.

It's ready to eat. The ginger helps calm the stomach. Good for the drugs your taking and whatever blood or materials you may still be ingesting which can cause a bit of nausea. It can be hard on the stomach so this will help.

Hope that makes you feel better. If you pre-make the broth and bring it to work. Everything else can heat up in the microwave. (Don't add the extras if you cant take anything but broth but it might feel better in your stomach if you can. just finely chop everything (including the enuke mushrooms) so you can get some substance. It's hard to work when you're starving.

Sorry the top of my recipe got cut off. This part goes first.
    ----
Get one of those large boxes of Chicken Broth. I prefer swanson but get whatever you like. Get a thingie of ginger. Just cut it into cubes and hack off the outer layer with a knife of a peeler. It doesn't have to be pretty. Bring to a simmer with the ginger in the broth. Keep that going until it is as spicy as you might like. Once that tastes good to you, get a slotted spoon and take out the ginger chunks.

    Next:
Finely chop green onion. Get a pack or two of enuke mushrooms. Enuke mushrooms are easy to swallow without really chewing anything and have a really mild flavor (and kind of the texture of noodles but with more nutrition). Add some fresh cilantro, and add some pepper to taste. Once the broth is ready just add all this stuff, cook for 2 more minutes and stir. Add bean sprouts when you can eat something a bit more hearty.

    • Bless, Shellie - that's really sweet of you to get this for him. :)mikotondria3
