Are there any issues to know about if building a website for a client who lives in another country?
Issues as far as hosting? Should I try to find a hosting provider located in the country where the most site visitors will come from?

what country?
if they have to go multi-lingual, a wordpress plug-in makes it somewhat easier than doing all the tweeky coding....

You won't be able to design for China and host in the US...
Don't know about Japan.

Host with someone that speaks your language. Preferably with someone you've worked with before.
I've gotten really shady service with in-country hosting providers, so that's my two cents.

I've used this company in Florida called Hostdime. Really cheap, and really simple.

I once designed a site about nuclear bombs for Iran. They wanted a 2.0 social networking site with widgets where you could upload bomb plans for nuclear bombs, to fire them over into Israel.
I was just outta college at that point, and I found them on Craigslist, so they kinda took me for a ride. Promised me more work down the road with higher pay but it never materialized.

If you are doing a site where the users will predominantly come from a single region then yes try to host it as close as possible. The more bounces data has to do the slower the site will run, also many networks prioritise local traffic over non-local.
If you need an english speaking contact, Hong Kong is probably the closest place you'll find one easily, however I'd be suprised if you can't get one in Japan...

All the Japanese hosting sites I've found seem way overpriced. The site is going to be small (5, 6 html pages) and no heavy media downloads, videos or anything. Just text, small amount of photos, and a logo.
I was thinking I could share the hosting off of my server here in the States.
