Well based on that article that ukit posted the live action film will most definitely be shite. Director Jaume Collet-Serra... the director of 'House of Wax', 'Unknown' and 'Orphan'.
Three absolutely shity fucking films. And he's talking about the characters in Akira not being strong? Fucking hell.
- In House of Wax, it took me 40 minutes to realize Paris Hilton wasn't a wax dummy.ETM

oh for fuck sake, who in their right mind would ok a remake if the cunt doing it says this about the source material:
"Nobody’s interesting"
- necromation0
I want to stab this man to death, film it and release it as "Citizen Kane". it's pretty much the same thing.
Stuff like this really, fucking sends my nerd blood pressure thru the roof. I still remember the first time i saw it... That shit really did change my life, in term of what is possible on film (even if its animation!).
I started buying the books and my small mind was blown even further, it was a masterpiece in storytelling. I remember just staring at panels, with that WTF look on my face... When people ask me what got you riding motorbikes... One word "Kanada".
- u mean, "canada" made u wanna ride a bike? This as nothing to do with akira.ApeRobot
- you must be joking right?necromation

- Phew...LOLnecromation

Yup. Out of all the nerd rage things, this is the one that makes my blood boil.
- inteliboy0
I mean -
"What I'm hoping is to bring characters ... Nobody’s interesting. Tetsuo's interesting because weird sh*t happens to him, and Kaneda is so two-dimensional."
Has he even read the manga??

Zac Effron and Kristen Stewart? Like it wasn't going to be shit enough already!

is the manga better than the anime? 'cause i tried watching it the other day and got 20 mins in before shutting it off. i just didn't care about anybody.
- maybe it just starts slow or somethingscarabin
- the comic is far superior, it's a 2,182-page book so the film was always going to struggle to condense the storyBluejam
- but it's still worth watching the filmBluejam
- You didn't watch long enough, the movie is great. Especially the last half hour or so.ukit2
- movie is only the first book really tooanimatedgif
- the movie is pretty awesome. The really visually cool stuff happens after the 20 minute mark tho.dopepope

Christopher Nolan's Rumored Next Project, Akira
- Nolan, I'd trust him to grasp the vibe of the manga and anime and make a good own film out of it.uan
- I'm sure he'd be a great producer, but in the end the final product would be European style.antimotion
- It would be nice to have the Hollywood money and produce via Japanese team, in Japan. But that won't happen because of casting purposes.antimotion
- ^ also, working in Japan with Japanese crews and rules especially is a nightmare for western teamsspl33nidoru
- Nolan is already quite good at ripping off anime.PhanLo

Between Ghost in the Shell and Akira, I feel that the latter shouldn't be made.
Akira's essence is structured around post war Japan after the atrocity of the atomic bombs being dropped and asiatic religious beliefs.
To rip those factors out of the original story and re-image it to flow into a European/Christian ideological system would literally diminish the original intent.
And then of course there's the fact that AKIRA is an epic masterpiece of art and expression.
On the other hand, GITS, while being a wonderful story and anime, was ahead of its time in regards to technology, robotics and theoretical data manipulation - could essentially be a standard action film.
Not to say I didn't slam my head into a brick wall when I heard that the most caucasian living actress in our known universe would be playing someone named Motoko didn't happen... But, the story itself, the essence of the story is more universal in my opinion.
So out of the two - I would say if one had to pull the trigger and make a film - GITS would be the lesser evil and AKIRA shouldn't be touched.
- GITS and Akira are also about fears, and the ghost in the shell network fear movies were released last year, I'd rather see a new war and weapons fear movie.uan

- Saw this earlier, it's the same dude who did the GitS shelling scene thing a while back. That was cool, this is nice but totally redundant.face_melter
- A+ amazing, but yeah just an exercise in style. if a live action (please no) is ever made, hopefully it's by a team who are all about character - not vfx.inteliboy
- It would be really hard to get the characters right. Really enjoyed this though. Crazy he does so much of it in Cinema 4D.PhanLo
