I can no longer defend the show, but I'll give my perspective on why I still watch.
First off, the show is shit. No excuses. There's a decent episode now and then, but yeah, the show has nose dived into filler episodes. The comic is not very far ahead at this point, and it definitely feels like they are stretching this shit out, for lack of ideas.
If the point of the show was to take deviations from the comic, as Kirkman has eluded to many times, then it shouldn't be too much to expect some interesting side plots. They should be getting Kirkman's friends at Image to write more episodes. The best episodes are the canned ones, and the finales, IMO.
I watch because I am heavily invested in the characters. I have been reading and collecting since issue 1, so I have this shameless obligation to stick with it. It's actually the only physical comic book I still get every month.
But the show does suck. Most of the characters are not interesting. Daryl is probably my favorite character. But I also care what happens to Carl, mostly because I think he will be the "Rick" someday, and in many ways far more ruthless. I've always felt like this was his story, and his rise to the wasteland throne. At least, I hope.
Someone concepted future Carl, and it's everything I hope this turns out to be, comic and show. This is why I still watch.

Last night was good on the start (bikers part) then nothing until the end. It was literally a zombie mob and people in the middle. Shooting, screaming and beeing eaten.

How hard is it to just build a heavily fortified area and stay there? And not go out on stupid missions all the time?
Just like there is no way humans can occupy every part of the country, it should be pretty easy to find a remote area in the woods with no zombies.
I was reading a theory on another site that everyone on the show is mildly brain damaged because of all the traumatic experiences and that's why they keep making so many dumb decisions.
