  my imac just turned off for no reason.

  turned on fine after not touching it for a while.

  what are possible reasons for this? nothing else on the power supply turned off?

  should i worry?

  go to applications > utilities and open console.app
  if the log list isn't showing, click the "show log list" button
  find system.log and select it
  look for the date and time your machine shut down and see if there are any log entries around that time that may give you a clue as to what happened.

  or was it only the iMac? you might have been updating an app or the app had auto update in their preferences and it automatically restarted but with a delayed start.. or static from you or things around you like a vibrator..

  It's been happening to me as well. It's a new mid 2010 iMac, 27", i7 quadcore intel, 16gb ram, 2TB hardrive with 256 solid state drive, 1gb vram radeon graphics card. The fucker randomly and spontaneously shuts down with no apparent reason what so ever. 4 times so far in the 4 weeks I've had it. Aside from this depressing quality, it's a beautiful machine and a pleasure to work with.
