For those familiar with the books by Stephen King.
J.J. Abrams has apparently dropped out of the project in fear of screwing up the film. Now, Ron Howard is suppose to be on board.
Anyone know anything more than this?

Last rumors were that Roland would be C. Bale. I think it should be Hugh Jackman.

It'll probably be massacred as typical, but you gotta try, right? If they are good then they'd be something worth it, if they are more than 'good', then that would be something (I'll be the first one is good, then the next 2-3 suck progressively worse as they crank them out to make the cash).
Still, there is potential.

There's enough there for more than a movie. More like a series.

How can you condense something the size of The Dark Tower series into a movie (or series of movies like the Harry Potter series)? There are so many layers, too much would have to be cut. Now an HBO series would be kick-ass. One season per book. That could possibly do it justice.

I wouldn't mind if they cut out a ton of the cheesy time-traveling. Reading Stephen King is one of my guilty-pleasures, but when he wrote himself into the story even I had to roll my eyes. Cut out some of the backstories behind his companions (in all honesty, they're borderline useless) and it can be brought down to maybe 1,738,548 hours.

"This latest development in the DT saga is being reported by the Heat Vision Blog, who tells us that Howard is teaming up with Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman to produce an initial Big Screen movie that would then lead on to a TV series. We could hazard a guess that if the television run became a huge success then they’d wrap the whole thing up with another movie release."

Of course its cheesy, doesn't mean its not awesome though. Anyways, I think Stephen King using himself fit the story rather well and helped make the whole thing more meaningful. No, its not as awesome as PKD in VALIS, but its a similar concept and in both cases serves the meaning of the story well.

Agreed. Respect for backing down because you feel you are incompatible.

I still think Hugh Jackman s/b Roland. It's worth noting that S.K. said himself he has never cared if they fuck up his movies, but the Dark Tower is his pride and joy. I guess the question is have CGIs caught up with the books.

Three movies, with a TV series in between each to bridge each film. Ron Howard directing first film and first TV series, Brian Grazer producing. I think we have a winner here!
