opening PDF in Illy

Been sent a pdf. I'm missing a font. It looks great if I just open the PDF but if I import into illustrator, it automatically tries to substitute.
FFS! The information is there, but Illy goes and changes it! Is there any way of just keeping it as an outline shape? ..like "use existing pixel data" in photoshop?
(oh and I don't want to use photoshop and turn the whole damn thing into pixels either..)

So, now that we are aware of this this semi-useless "feature," why are you trying to open this PDF in Illustrator while preserving the outlined type? Just out of curiosity.

because my sister emailed me a pdf of her wedding invite and wanted a cream background slapped in. I'll be fucked if I'm going to go font hunting for that.
Bastard thing is I made the bloody thing! but my highly-experienced-fellow-design... housemate made one tiny change while i was away and sent it to her un-outlined and with no fonts. the tit. And I know he wont answer an email from me during the day so this is the only way.
