I added one to a site we look after for work (holiday site) and in a month (140k+ page views/day) there were 84 uses of the addthis button.
Probably worth it on some sites but definitely not for everyone.

I kind of feel that everybody knows how to share web sites without one of those little widgets.

I hate those things. If you do go this route - make sure the fucking mouseOut/hide functionality works.
Irritates the shit out of me when those things pop up, unbidden, floating above the content I'm trying to consume.
